Not from this limited information. Would need to know her total gross income for each year and, crucially, her age? As it sounds as though she may be entitled to the higher age related allowance.
But best doing that on the separate thread you started? If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Hi Tony,
I hope you can give me some pointers on this, I’ll keep it as short and to the point as I can.
I am receiving my company pension on which I pay a small amount of income tax. A few days ago a friend and his wife asked if I might be able to help out mowing their lawns for this coming season as their normal person had now retired at short notice and they couldn’t find anyone yet who they felt suited to fill the position. I have said I would consider it but it could only be for this season only as my wife retires later this year and we have plans of our own. They agreed to this and have offered to pay me for my time.
Given this situation I’m wondering if it will effect my pension? Would it be treated as a separate income and not effect the tax I pay on my pension? I’ve heard that I am able to earn a certain amount other than my pension before I pay tax, if this is the case have you any guide as to what this might be?
Depending on your comments and advice I will either accept or decline their offer, as I don’t want to fall fowl of loads of red tape and paperwork (I had enough of that before retiring!).
Thank you in advance

I claim capital allowances of approx £3K per annum for my soley used business vehicle ( my turnover is less than £20K)... I am voluntarilly VAT registered.
I wish to dispose of this vehicle..obviously declaring it's disposal and any balancing charge.
I want to business lease a replacement vehicle which will cost approx the same amount ( £3k per annum ) PLUS another £600 pa in vat.
I am I correct in claiming the £3k leasing charges as before as a normal business expense and then recaiming the £600 pa vat to offset against the vat I collect ( which isn't much) in that same year?
my sincere thanks in advance0 -

Hi Will.
I never see many people's queries getting answered in this part of the board now days....If I were you I would be tempted to repost your thread in the cutting tax area of the board.
I think you would get a much better response there. The loopy one has gone :j0 -
My partner was unemployed for 3 years-he was a self employed site manager in the construction industry (paying his tax regularly) -including 2008-2009, and claiming job seekers allowence. The tax office told him that he owed about £500 in tax for this period, even though he only worked for 3 weeks during this period (he did tell then this). He thought this was wrong as he only had job seekers allowance and housing benefit , but another tax office told him he owed even more money, and yet another tax office told him he was due a rebate! He got no-where when he kept trying to query this and never got the same answer twice. He has given up and is now paying monthly instalments (before the amount goes up again from a different tax office!) by borrowing from family etc, as he is still unemployed. Could you please tell us why he is paying money back when he only had jobseekers allowance, or any advice on how to sort this out. Thank you.0

There is no substitute for starting at some point where your partner's tax affairs were in order and then carefully working forward checking each year's totals.
Unfortunately there were a lot of people who failed to understand how the every increasing complexity of income tax worked, they simply assumed that HMRC was getting it more or less right and "lost" some of the "bumph" they were sent.
Meanwhile the tax system was creaking and a decision was made to automate and centralise the records and cut the head count.
Well for many of us it turned into a nightmare as the new dumb computer system was started up on unclean data. Not knowing that people had two jobs and periods of unemployment on PAYE taxable Job Seekers Allowance etc. etc.
Letters to the tax man simply went un answered, some offices had a back log of 100's of thousands of such letters.
Meanwhile a system of automatic "penalties" and interest charges had been introduced so are you sure that your partner owes just tax or has he been "fined" for not keeping up with his annual self employed tax returns end enquiries?.
IF you have accurate records start your own thread in the tax saving sub forum and helpful people will try to sort out the mess.0 -
My mother passed away in September 2010. Today I received a letter from HMRC saying "an incorrect amount of state retirement pension was included in her tax code" for tax years 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 and that the estate owes £3216.66. Surely this is their error, they knew what state retirement pension she was entitled to, so I really don't think it is fair. I read in one of Tax Tony's posts about Extra Statutory Concession A19. Can I claim this in this case? I had nothing to do with my mother's tax affairs when she was alive so I don't even know where to begin.0

Who was the executor (or administrator for those with no will dying "intestate")?
That personal representative should have agreed the income tax position with HMRC. Filling in a form R27 is usually the quick and dirty way of agreeing the position and usually getting a modest refund of over deducted tax. [For death the individual gets a full year's personal allowance, when ever they die during the year, so only in March/April is the system likely to be accurately up to date at death and planning one's demise tends to make an autumn/winter death give the best refund. [Late enough to have absorbed the personal allowance but soon enough not to have exceeded the limit that qualifies for the "pensioners" high rate allowance]
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/claim-for-deceased.htm
Has the personal representative obtain "probate", and did they then follow the procedure of advertising for creditors - intended to foreshorten the normal statute of limitations on unacknowledged debt recovery from 6 (5 in Scotland) years down to 2 - 3 months?
[I don't know if it is effective with tax debts].

So for the deceased, you could have two more arguments for claiming relief from belated tax in addition to those qualifying for Extra Statutory Concession A19.
Good luck,
John.
PS - If you start your own thread, with a headline linking ESC A19 and death/probate, you are likely to attract more interest and replies.
There are already dozens of threads asking for advice on claiming ESC A19. Eg:

[Cynically plugging away on the "can't pay won't pay" angle, if you have a case, seems to work]
Your situation is a new twist on an old story; let us all know how you get on.0
