I'd base yourself either in Penzance, St Ives or Falmouth. Or if you didn't want busy places you could look at outlying villages such as Newlyn & Mousehole, Lelant & Carbis Bay or Penryn. All have good bus links to the aforementioned towns.

Some holiday cottage companies I can recommend:

    there's also private rentals:

  • I went to Newquay a few years back and loved it. I don't drive but it was pretty much come out of the station onto the beach. From memory there were lots of places to eat/drink that were walkable from the station. Also a large Morrison's.

We had a day out to Padstow from Newquay. We sat on top of the double decker and the view was stunning. Huge bus negotiating narrow bendy roads. Lovely.

The surf school was great fun to watch.

We stayed here a few years ago http://www.railholiday.co.uk/ and although we were car drivers, I think this would be ideal for you as you could catch the train there and the carriages are right beside the station.

We stayed in the Old Luggage van at St Germans as it was two of us with our dog, which was securely fenced.

You could then use it as a base and travel to other destinations in and around Cornwall.

You can also walk into the local town and where there are pubs etc to get something to eat, or use the facilities in the accommodation.

    Happy holidays :j

p.s. and some lovely walking can be done from here too

Newquay isn't typical of what people expect Cornwall to be like - many people (myself included) consider it to be a dump.

Whoops! ..... It's the bus depot I was thinking of, I could blame post Christmas blues but I won't I was just so wrong..... Thank you to the poster below he/she could have chastised me in a ball breaking way as others tend to do on posts.

We stayed in Boscastle, although we drove it is served by a train station.

That'll come as a surprise to the locals.... the nearest station's Launceston or Bodmin.

20 miles away .... Cornish miles.

    Falmouth.

Connected by a half decent train service. Fantastic pubs (the front, chainlocker, seven stars etc). Some shops with truro only 20 mins away and lots of good walks towards the Helford or over the ferry towards Flushing or St Mawes.
  • I would not use Holiday Lettings ever again. I booked with them last month. The price quoted on the trip advisor website was not the price I paid. It increased by 100 pounds plus which was a letting fee and another 100 pounds for a deposit which was held by the owner for over a month before returning it to me.
The reviews on trip advisor for self catering are all vetted by the owner first hence only positive 5 star reviews get published.
    Look elsewhere.

Holiday Lettings is a host site for private holiday cottage owners. You can't say the whole site is at fault. Fault lies with the owner. Why did you look at the TripAdvisor price and assume it was correct? If that's not what was quoted via Holiday Lettings or the owner direct why would you pay it?
That's like going into a restaurant, not looking a the prices on the menu, ordering, eating and then moaning about the price.
