The tax ran until the 1st of Nov in my mums name

I phoned up the DVLA to find out how I went about taxing it as I've never owned a car before so thought they would give me the best advice.

I wouldn't get the tax reminder as my mum lived in Scotland and the property given back to the landlord. I had no new owner slip to sign as I couldn't find the V5 and they said the best thing to do was to apply for a new V5 using the V62 form. They initially said I would have a new V5 within in 4 weeks I then rang them again and was told 6 weeks and then again told 8 weeks.

I asked what I could do in the meantime and they advised that I couldn't do anything other than keep it off the road and wait for them to be in contact

Are the calls recorded (by either you or DVLA)? If so, I'd imagine that if the conversations were exactly as you said and you followed the advice, they can't fine you.
  • Something about this isn't correct.

You can not tax a car if you are the new keeper and you don't have the V5C or the V5C/2. You have to wait until the V5C is returned so how has the OP taxed the car if they didn't receive it?

No that's isn't correct. My father recently bought a new van and he taxed it online on his mobile before he drove it from the guys house. Under the new rules a change of ownership means the car has to be taxed by the new owner immediately.

But I'm surprised to see that the DVLA told the OP to wait until the V5C arrives before it should be taxed?.

You only need the details from the green V5C/2 to tax a vehicle as the new keeper, you don't need to wait for the V5C in your name.

Without a V5C or V5C/2, a new keeper would need to apply for the tax at a Post Office with the forrm V62 and a form V10.

But I didn't have that either I had nothing at all for the car just the car itself.

the original log book was misplaced when we packed my mums house up we couldn't find it anywhere so I had nothing to get the tax with

Which is what I did but I never received the notification or V5 to say it was now in my name and that I could now tax it so was waiting on them because they told me it would be up to 8 weeks and then they fined me :(

Nope. Both the V62 and the V10 say

If you are not the registered keeper of the vehicle you may not be able to tax until you get a V5C in your name.

It's the same if you want to SORN it.

But you said above you had now taxed it. How did you do that?
