Would you be offended if your children were invited to a party only after other guests had cancelled?
My son's friend is having a 5th birthday party next month. They are having it at home and the mum felt that there would comfortably be room for about 10-12 children. I think she invited 14 in the end. They invited the children that her son is closest to/wanted to invite (some from school, but not all). My son was invited but other children inevitably were left out, although mum did explain to those children who asked (as children of that age are prone to do), that they would have loved to invite more people but didn't have the room. My son is no longer able to go (he will be in hospital that weekend) and a couple of other children have also declined. Apparently the mum then attempted to invite a couple of other children (explaining what had happened) but the parents were really offended. Personally, under the circumstances, I don't see the problem - in fact it is probably something that I would have done - but OH agrees with the other parents and said if our son had been invited afterwards he wouldn't have been keen to let him go. I could understand if they were inviting others just to make up numbers, but I don't think that's the case here.
Just wondered how others might feel?

I understand only having a certain number to house so wouldn't be upset if my children got invited after others refused tbh.Have a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T0

i would probably have a bit of a moan under my breath but would still let my child go.
At the end of the day its an adult decision and i cant see why the children have to miss out. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
If they had limited space, they had no other choice. What does your OH think the parents should have done differently?Mortgage when started: £330,995

I agree totally with this, we have done the same in the past.0

Oh I'm so glad to be past that stage!
The kids don't know any better, they change friendship groups and fall out all the time, so it's no big deal.
Parents who are moaning have nothing better to worry about, they are living through their kids.
Hope your son is ok xNever again will the wolf get so close to my door :eek:0 -
Both my children have been invited as part of a 'second' round. I didn't feel offended at all as indeed, they were not children they were close to. Ironically, in both cases, it was following the occasion that they became closer friends.
I would have been upset (on behalf of my children) if it had been one of their closest friends.0 -
I don't think I would be offended if this happened to my children.
I'm at the stage now where I would only do little parties of close friends anyway. I never did the invite the whole class party.Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010

I'm not going to stress if my lads or on the first list, or second, or third.
I'll be distinctly less supportive if they're expected to rock up with exotic presents though.
I'll also be less cooperative for a three hour child-exclusive event that's over an hour away...0 -

Once the whole class except my daughter was invited :eek: Apparently it was because my daughter had longer hair than the birthday girl. ten years on the girls meet up to discuss boyfriends / A levels etc.
Did think the parents were a bit weird allowing it.Never again will the wolf get so close to my door :eek:0 -
It's only a big deal if the parents make it in to one. I doubt any of the kids involved will even know or care that they were in the first/second line of invites.0
