Dad getting daily calls from Cabot Finance- Help

Hi there,

Ive been at home over the christmas period for a few weeks, and have noticed my Dad is getting daily calls on the landline from a company called Cabot Finance.

He doesnt even answer the landline these days, and when I do he tells me to say hes not in and that its nuisance calling.

Having googled them today the I noticed they are a debt firm. I know in the past he hasnt exactly been excellent with his accounts, and am wondering if he is in some sort of trouble (in which case Id like to help)

M thought is surely that arent ringing him everyday just for agressive selling?

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Unless someone has a conversation with the caller, how will you/he know? It can very soon be determined if it is a nuisance call or genuine by asking for the name or account number of the person with whom they are trying to connect that any genuine company would/should have.

Have you asked him if he has debt issues? If he doesn't want to talk to you about it perhaps you could leave him a link to the Debtfree Wannabe board?

well first of all you need to ask your dad if he has got problems and if he owes money , then you can proceed.

he/you can get your (his) credit report from 2 of the 3 credid reference agencies free of charge , google noddle and clearscore for FREE monthly internet report , this then only leaves one to check , and you can sign up for a one month free trial (remember to cancel) .

if there are red marks , then you need to act , however its possible that they are ringing/chasing the wrong number.

do some checking up , then ask in The Credit File & Ratings Board , second one from top

    Hi guys appreciate the responses.

Firstly just to say I know they want to speak to him as they ask for him directly.

Secondly I have not asked him about debt issues. We also do get PPI calls daily, so i bracketed these phone calls in with these. However i thought today to google this company and have seen they are a debt firm.

Essentially what I am wanting is an answer to this. Is it possible they are calling him like he says, simply to nuisance, salesy call OR based on the type of company is it most likely he owes money and this is why they are calling?

You may not be able to make a judgement on percentages and thats fair enough. But point being I dont want to just ask him if he has debt issues based on what could just be nuisance calling

cabot finance do not do sales calls. they are a company that buys outstanding debts for pennies in the pound will a hope to retrieve money.

if you cannot or will not ask your father outright , then their is not a lot more you can do , apart from buying him one of those phones that has a barring thing on it , or a loud whistle to annoy the caller.

cabot have been known to buy debts , very close to the 6 yr mark or even after , and 6 yrs is the cut-off for defaults. your father needs to check "if" any of the skeletons" have actually been to court and got CCJs

There is a small chance they could be chasing someone else with the same name. There's no reason why they would be making a sales call, they don't sell anything. It is more likely that they are pursuing a debt, and the daily calls will stop if he communicates with them.

(I'm sure pg was joking but please don't follow the whistle suggestion. This has the potential to cause serious injury.)

It doesn't seem very likely that a sales company would pretend to be a debt collection company. Debt collection companies pretend to be all sorts of things to get to talk to people, but I can't see any logic whatsoever in doing things the other way around.

You are not going to get anywhere without either:

    1) Asking your father if he has a problem
    2) Taking a call from the company as if you were your father in order to find out what they want.

Obviously the former is by far the better option, but if your relationship with your father is such that you cannot go down that route and you are still worried, you may not have much choice.
There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.

please repost this in The Credit File & Ratings Board , to get bespoke help , I worry about communicating with them , as it can often restart a 6 yr clock , and cabot are known to buy short dated claims.

you/he needs to do those credit searches to find out who is after monies and the dates , then you can proceed.

please post in the suggested forum , for bespoke advice

Thanks chaps. I will do a credit search as suggested. If it pulls something up I will speak to him about it, and also post my findings in the new board as advised.

    Thanks
