If they just turn despite you saying its not convenient lots of people are saying do not let them in... please do NOT do this, remember it's not just you and the agency in the equation there are the viewers too. They have taken time out of their day to do the viewing I expect they have no knowledge about the notice given or you have said you are unable to do do the viewing. they just want to view the flat.
Punishing them for the fault of the agency seems unfair.
So what? The potential time wasted for the viewers is not the OP's fault, that lies totally with the agency and their lack of respect for their existing tenant.
If OP gives in and lets them do the viewing so as not to inconvenience a complete stranger then they will know they can get away with it whenever they want.

On the other hand, perhaps it is useful for them to learn what sort of treatment they'd get from this letting agent should they decide to take the flat...

So did the viewing go ahead. I wouldn't allow anyone to look around my home while I wasn't there. What happens if something goes missing?

It could just a straight case of the OP automatically giving in because of the authoritative tone of the agent and not being fully sure of their own rights. I've done it myself before, especially when I was new in my job...a confidence issue essentially.
...it was pretty much this! I've already got my reference etc. etc. from them and at this late stage in the tenancy, the agents hold nothing over me.

Thank you all very much for your replies, I had a good giggle at a few and it gave me the confidence that I WAS in the right so I called them back.

I was ready to have a go and use my 'parent' voice to tell them I was entitled to 24 hours notice (with of course the swingers story as a backup), but when I called I spoke to a lovely woman who basically said the other woman was a b---- and if I ever called and got her again, to just hang up and try later. She said it was perfectly fine to cancel the viewing and any others if my heart so desired!

So there you go, a happy ending.

An honest agent? It must be a leap yea.... hang on, oh yes, it is ;)
  • Ok, not such a happy ending.

Yesterday, they arrived an hour early for the first viewing, which I was annoyed at (what if I was running about in just my pants?!), but couldn't really do much about as I was leaving for work and running late, so it was just a coincidence I was there anyway. I called to complain and was assured it wouldn't happen again. Then when I got home from work at 6.30, they were still doing viewings even though they had only said about one at 4pm! This morning I called to complain AGAIN and was promised they'd wrap things up quicker next time.

I'm not going to bother hoovering for the next viewings and I'll leave all the windows open so they can hear the trains and hopefully get a whiff of next door's 'habit'. Ha, that will show them.

I find 'adult' material on loop on the TV puts people off just as well....! :)

Seriously ... you are on the way out - nothing will change - you're not the customer any more. I would take immense satisfaction in changing the lock.

I give up. Why did you come here for advice? You've had repeated promises, all broken and your response is to stop hoovering.....???!!

If they turn up on the doorstep at the wrong time why on earth are you letting them in?

Stop wimping about. Write a firm straight polite letter (no more phone calls) and change the locks.
