Is this cap-quest default correct?

Hi, I was hoping to get some advice from those of you more knowledgeable than myself!
My husband and I are hoping to,buy a new home this year so to prepare iv obtained a copy of my credit file from experian. On it I have found a default from a company called cap quest on an otherwise perfect report.
On further investigation it seems this comes from car finance iv previously held in 2011. The report shows the car finance was settled at the end of the term with no missed payments however there is a payment for £201 outstanding which is a charge for a scratch on the vehicle when returned. So although the ful and final balance was settled as it should this payment appears to have been registered as a default by cap quest on behalf of Santander. Is this something that's allowed to happen? A non credit payment being registered on your credit file?
Also if I were now to pay this sum off would it help my credit score in any way? Or make it worse as I'm accepting liability? I'm so disappointed that such a small amount will now stop me buying a new home:(
Thank you x

Did you not receive paperwork regarding this amount 4 years ago?
If you pay it off now it makes no difference to your credit file, it will still be destroyed for another 2 years.
If you kept the paperwork where it shows you paid full and final balance then you could try and contest it with Capquest.
You could always try a broker as they will be able to help you find a provider even with a default.I'm a Board Guide on the Credit Cards, Loans, Credit Files & Ratings boards. No, I haven't. When the finance plan finished and the car was handed back and I received a letter saying there was a charge for a scratch on the vehicle. I queried this as the car wasn't brand new when I took out the plan so how could it be proved I damaged it. Also the car was picked up whilst I was at work and not signed for. I never heard any more about it other than a letter saying the credit agreement was paid in ful. It's now 4 years later, I've moved addresses and been married so have never received any paperwork. The first I knew of it was when I went to check my file in preparation for a mortgage
Am I screwed either way now? Is it possible to get a mortgage with a default. I currently already have one.0 -
When you say you queried the letter about the scratch, do you have proof of this or any response from the company squashing the charge?
Yes it is possible to get a mortgage with a default, you need to use a broker however. Are you saying you now have 2 defaults? If you have 2 defaults that narrows your chances even more but again, a broker is your best bet.I'm a Board Guide on the Credit Cards, Loans, Credit Files & Ratings boards.
