You cannot change water supplier. Just phone them up. Where the meter is is their problem. What they do will vary depending on area/your actual flat.

I rented a flat once and was paying high water rates (£40/month), spoke to a neighbour who said they were on an amount set by lifestyle (studio flat, no hose etc etc) and were paying £26. I phoned the water company expecting them to put me on that rate and a man turned up (without warning) with a water meter in his hand and fitted it under the sink (didn't expect that!). Water bills, metered, then worked out at £12/month.

So, just phone them and leave it at that.... see what happens.

    HER - that's not enough.

You need to ask where the meter, if any, is located and acquire the habit of reading it yourself. Ask Thames when/how the last occupier's bill was calculated. Ask for a current reading and how they have this, if you discover it yourself.

This prevents you being landed with silly bills or unnecessarily high monthly debits. It also means you will note any sudden change, which can indicate leakage/faulty pipework etc.

Thames Water have freephone 0800 980 8800 - even better.
