Water Meter Reading

I have just recently brought a 2 bedroom flat and am looking in to getting my water supplier sorted. This is all new to me.

On the contract I received the vendor had Thames Water as her water supplier. Do I use the same one?

I am trying to figure out where the water meter is located but cant seem to find one in the flat. Would this likely be in a communal cupboard outside in the hallway? I guess this is required by the water company before I ring them up?

Hope someone can help with this question. More to come in the DIY thread.

Thanks

Water supply is only ever by the local company. So Thames Water it is.

Maybe there is no meter. What did the PIF say about a meter?

Water companies are not like other utilities where you can use anyone you like. I think you are covered by Thames water and I don't think there is another company for you to change to.

    Thanks for clarifying that both.

Sorry for my ignorance what does PIF mean? I will ring Thames water tomorrow.

    Thanks

Property information form. It's what tells you the supplier and hopefully answers any questions about boundary disputes, disputes with neighbours and warranties on any work undertaken recently.

If you have a meter it'll likely be in the pavement at the boundary of your property by the water isolation tap. If you don't have one you will just find a tap!

Thanks. Just reading through the contract and it just says the provider name and location of meter left blank, so likely not to be in the flat. I may just email the management company to ask them.

    Many Thanks

It is quite probable that there is no meter - there are mandatory for all new supplies and some people have had them fitted retrospectively.

Your bill is probably based on the Rateable Value of your property.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

By all means ask the management company if there are meters fitted, but it'll probably be quicker to phone Thames Water and ask them. You can tell them the new name to send the bills to while you're at it.

Or take a screwdriver to the street and look for the round metal cover in the pavement. Lift it and see what's in there. Old fashioned looking tap = no meter, round dial with numbers on = meter. You'll need this reading so you only pay for the water you use, so if it's not in the pack you are likely not on a meter.

How old is your flat? My previous place was 10 years old and in the car park out front there was a small manhole cover that said 'water' on it. Inside were the meters for most of the flats in the block. Interestingly my flat and the one next to it were mislabelled and we were paying the wrong usage for a while. Got a large credit once that was sorted. :D
