Packing a cabin bag for long haul

I am going to visit my sister in New Zealand in a few weeks. I haven't booked the flight yet as I'm waiting for my passport renewal to arrive first but I am hoping to get a 'one stop' flight.
The thing is I've never been on a long haul flight and haven't a clue what to put in my cabin bag.
Suggestions please.

A set of spare clothes, a book, maybe a drink after you go airside, a snack, tablets that you may be taking. I pack wet wipes, some paracetamol just incase, my toothbrush and paste, some face cream, make up, my knitting, iPad, earphones for watching inflight movies, pen for completing the customs form, hairbrush, gum etc.

Sorry to ask are you male or female? I only ask as men tend to just pack gadgets and stuff whereas a woman would pack an extra set of clothes.0

I pack a small pouch (think pencil case) with small essentials which helps keep them all together. It can tuck into the seat pocket if you don't want your whole bag under your feet. It contains earplugs, eyemask (both help block out noise and light if you want to sleep) earphones, pen for immigration forms, mouths pray, hand sanitiser, tissues.
I also take a spare set of undies, socks and clothes in case you're separated from your luggage, a small bag of toiletries with toothpaste and brush, comb, wet wipes and deodorant, some headache tablets and whatever keeps you entertained when you're bored of films. If you still have space an inflatable neck pillow is helpful for sleeping upright without getting a cricked neck.

Ipad /kindle
headphones
change of knickers and t shirt minimum (it's a long flight in the same clothes)
camera
mobile if you are taking it (don't forget to turn off roaming
wipes, toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant
pen for filling out forms on entry ( don't know if NZ still has paper forms for customs but probably do)
socks - my feet always get cold on long flights
slanket -blankets most airlines hand out in economy aren't adequate often.
sweeties
That plus passport and tickets is what my carry on bag always has for long flights.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Not nice sitting next to anyone who has worn the same shirt for nearly 24 sweaty hours. Men are definitely more guilty of this than women on long flights.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Anything you take will be deemed to be a weapon by some Jobsworth at airport security and confiscated!0

True. I pack my camera gear, a set of noise cancelling earphones and my ipod. My wife packs as if she was going away for a weekend self catering.0 -
Here's how my head worked for a 12 hour flight. In order of thought (21-25 are new thoughts). You can read a lot into my mind workings here:
1) Tablet and headphones.
2) Charger for tablet.
3) Power bar back up charger for tablet.
4) Download stuff to tablet before travel.
5) Download Kindle app to tablet before travel.
6) Sweets and chocolate.
7) The airline will (check) hand out drinks on request and serve food.
8) Deoderant, toothbrush, toothpaste.
9) Tee shirt, socks and undies.
10) Pen and paper.
11) Paracetimol and any prescription medication.
12) Free newspaper from the airport.
13) Book.
14) Passport. Boarding cards. Itiniary with flight times, terminal numbers etc all over it.
15) Travel insurance documents.
16) Printed list of phone numbers for family, airlines and hotels just in case your phone fails.
17) Phone! And charger!
18) Local currency and plastic cards.
19) Adaptor plug for destination. Imaging your hold luggage vanishing and being unable to charge your tablet or phone!
20) A torch to make rummaging around in your bag easier!
21) A pair of shorts. Just in case my jeans get something spilled on them!
22) Condoms. Big time mile high opportunity.
23) Lounge pass for airport where your flight breaks (this may be somewhere you can book a shower).
24) A towel if you've booked a shower.
25) A bag to store your damp towel in.0 -

That's it, in one very small day sackChange is inevitable, except from a vending machine.0 -
Personally I'd be packing as a bare minimum a change of underwear & t-shirt for the reasons many people have pointed out, if for nothing else to also have a little bit of freshness at some stage! My tablet & kindle would be the next things in there along with the charger which covers both, I always laughed at tablets but it makes a long haul flight so much easier! I always have a pen on me cos trying to find one to fill in those little entry cards can be a bit annoying & if all else fails it allows you to do the crossword in the paper.
I'd also want some chewing gum in there as it'll keep the mouth a little fresher & possibly some baby wipes as well. (I have the feeling the "man card" should be handed in as a result of that!) It's also prudent to point out that by this time my backpack has already been checked, so the passport & documents are all in the front pocket ready to go!Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0
