I think I need a new phone soon - suggestions please!

Options
Me:
I currently have an iPhone 5 where the battery life when being used is as little as an hour.

I typically use 1GB of data a month, a dozen texts and about two minutes of calls. Very occasional overseas use - I'll usually wait until wifi kicks in though.

I have a sim only deal with Virgin (mates rates) where £9 a month covers it.

I'm not a phone snob, but value ease of use. I've been happy with the S3 and iPhone5 from a usability perspective.
---
My son (18):
No idea what his handset is but it's wrecked. Barely usable.

He has 8 months left on an EE contract offering 500Mb of data. He runs out most months so probably needs 1GB. Minimal use of calls and texts. Currently paying £14 a month.
---
I've set him the task of finding cost conscious solutions but would value any other input.

I can get 10% of Vodafone contracts and 25% off Virgin, although at first glance this doesn't seem to bring Vodafone into a competitive place.

Thank you in advance.

Buy some cheap Windows Mobile for usability, very decent specs for under £100, some under £50 (check carphonewarehouse website) Voda has 25% off sim only at the moment, try Talk Mobile Voda sister company, currently sim only £10.00 a month
    3000 minutes
    5000 text
    2GB 4GB Data
    12 months

    or EE sister https://www.lifemobile.co.uk

With minimal use and more data for both I would be recommend payg, Delight runs on EE, 3p mins, 2p texts, 1p per MB or 1GB bundle can be had for £5, unlimited FREE calls and texts between Delight users, no top up required so you or your son will never be caught short to contact each other.

Port your number in for a £30 bonus as well which should go to helping pay towards some new handsets

"Here at Delight Mobile, we love offering new customers a warm welcome. That’s why when you first make the move to our network, we’ll offer you £30 free credit – just to welcome you aboard!

There’s no contract required or any hidden fees. Just simply join up, top up a minimum of £5 each month and we’ll give you £10 free credit for the next three months. It’s simple!"

Top up £5 and buy a £5 data bundle (£10 free credit expires in 30 days, use it or lose it) but you could buy their £15 Unlimited bundle for 3 months http://www.delightmobile.co.uk/pay-as-you-go/offers/joining-bonus.aspx or any other combo of bundles.

Currently a £10 top up gets you 3GB data free^

Why dont you get your battery replaced?

Virgin is only 25% off sim prices, since they have changed to freestyle contracts you dont get 25% off mobile phones

Get a Nokia 1100, lasts a week between charges if not more. Only costs £10 for a nearly new one on EBay

You don't need 3/4G - just use your phone for txt and calls, you'll enjoy life a lot more!

    Cheers fj

A new genuine battery is about £20, the screwdrivers you'll need about £3 and after five minutes (check out YouTube) you'll have a brand new iPhone 5.
