O/S Daily Sunday 3 January 2016

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine

Morning everyone

Csarina - still thinking of you and your family, sounds like you're really having a bucketful at the moment, hopefully once Fridays' passed things will settle down a bit. I'm completely with you with behaving in a way that the occasion demands, at least you'll be able to look back and know you did the right things and will have no regrets, stay strong x

Still dark, wet underfoot not raining, not so blustery, but temperature has really dropped off here.

DH and myself are awake enjoying first cuppas - boys still in their pits.

Yesterday was another quiet day - I went out with DH first thing just to do a couple of quick jobs, then home. Boys went out with my family and stayed to eat with them last night and got home at 11pm, having had a trip to the beach for a walk then to mum and dads' where my bro organised food. Sounds like they had a good day with their cousins etc. DS1 said when he got back last night, there's some papers at nan and grandads' that you've got to sign, everyone else has already signed and you and ******** still have to sign - well thanks a bunch the ******** is one of their neighbours - so that's where I am in the whole scheme of things. So cross that they've said something to my boys before me putting them in a awkward position and really cross that I'm left til last yet again. I appreciate that it's difficult when we're all spread out but they've not uttered a word about this until sil said about it a few weeks before xmas and then gave me the impression she thought she shouldn't have said anything. They still haven't said anything to me. If they'd rung me and said something earlier and just said there's papers to sign at the start so everyone knew at the same time - but of course no, I'm left feeling s**t yet again, families. I know someone has to sign last as it's not easy for everyone to sign at the same time.

DH was fine yesterday I pretty much pleased myself what I did and pottered about in the kitchen and house in general, had quite a while on pc doing different things. Seems he's got the message as he's being overly nice this morning, we'll see.

Food yesterday was cooked meats, pork pie, scotch egg, salad etc, boys ate out.

Lunch today is roast beef, roasties, mash, carrots, HG brussels, peas, cauli, yorkshires, and gravy. Beef is the joint that came with my meat hamper, hopefully I'll manage cook it ok.

DH is going to fetch his work van this morning, if he can have it at home and leave straight from here it saves him time in the morning. He and DS1 are back to work tomorrow, DS2 goes back to school on Tuesday, I'm on leave this week - I have another never ending "to do" list! Tomorrow DS2 and myself are blitzing his bedroom, I want to get as much stuff taken to either the Charity shop or recycling centre - there's plenty for both. Hopefully if we can make a good start on his bedroom, it'll give me some motivation to keep going, I really don't want to waste this week's leave by not doing much. It will leave me feeling yuk if at the end of the week I've not been productive. Had quite a while yesterday on pc - reading about how so many batch cook so they're 1 step ahead foodwise in the week. I do menu plan but still need some work on then using up LO's and then using LO's to make another meal, ie, having a whole chicken to roast, then using the remaining meat and carcass to make stock for soup or risotto etc, I do try. Something to keep going with I think. I have written a menu plan for this week using what I have in the fridge, will go through what's left in the veg/salad drawer to see what needs using up.

Decs all taken down and put away - looks so bare, but good to get getting back to normal - whatever that is.

Have peaceful Sundays' everyone x

Keep safe and well x

    Morning All

First of all, Happy New Year! Been so busy here with visitors I've not managed to post.

Csarina, can it get any worse for you? I hope by Friday everyone has got over themselves. Enormous hugs to you.
Rosyred, what a terrible time, I hope you recover from this really quickly.
Hugs to those not feeling too good and those with grumpy OHs. Sometimes I'm glad I am on my own!

Had to get up at 3.30 this morning to take DS2 and GF to the airport, went back to bed but didn't really sleep, just dozed for a while. Still, the WM is on its second cycle, lots more to do with the bedding, etc.

Really enjoyed having visitors here, New Years Day saw 12 folk here for dinner, a good chat and some silly games and went to Glasgow with all yesterday and treated them to lunch as a final farewell. DSs GF is lovely, helped to clear up after meals, made cups of tea and was worried that she hadn't stripped the bed before they left.

A nice quiet day in store for me, lots of cleaning and tidying to do, will be eating left overs for a few days! Take care. XX
  • Morning all. Thanks nmlc for starting us off. Sounds like things have settled down a bit with DH. Let's hope the "being nice" carries on. Know what you mean about the house looking bare without Xmas decs up. It seemed strange just putting on one lamp and my new Scentsy this morning! But it looks far less cluttered so all's good!

I need to pop out for some milk, eggs and mixed berries (for my porridge) this morning. But I am avoiding a sm as I don't want to get tempted by anything else we don't need! I'll probably just go to Uncle Jack's (aka Jack Fultons) for the odd bits I want. I still don't need to go near a sm for a while yet! My mission to get present stocks down to more manageable levels is still on track.

For the first time ever I didn't get a diary bought at Xmas so want to pop into Poundland for a cheapie at the same time. I hope not to succumb to browsing in any sales whilst in town - depends how my willpower holds up! Not that we have many exciting shops here!!

My thoughts are still with those of you with grief, family woes and other problems. (((((((HUGS)))))) where wanted/needed. CSARINA, ROSYRED and REDRUBY in particular. Take care all xx

(((Hugs))) to all in need , and it seems quite a few are in need X

Up early this morning but I'm just relaxing on the sofa with the cat
Going to have a quiet day , the house is clean I'll just need to swish the bathroom and kitchen and run the Hoover round

I made turkey soup yesterday so we can have that for lunch , not sure what's for dinner yet but there's plenty in the freezer

Hope everyone has a great Sunday xx
  • Morning all

Hugs to all those in need.

Enjoying my last lazy morning here today, back to work tomorrow and it's a 5:30 start. urrgh.
I shall run the vacuum round and swish & swipe the kitchen but that's about it, there is washing drying on the maiden, I'll put it away when it's done.

Roast beef today with all the trimmings, no packups needed for tomorrow as lunch is provided, the rest of the week it's ham sandwiches for hubby & soup for me.

I'm on round three of my 32 crochet squares, I need to start another 32, but have to wait for better weather, they are too fiddly to do in poor light.

    Have a good day everyone.

    Hugs Hester
    Chin up, Titus out.

    Morning everyone.

I've no idea what it's like outside though I think it's cold.

Thanks for the thread nmlc - from reading your posts every morning it's obvious that you work very hard and then come home and make three courses each evening with plenty of choices and then get grumbled at...doesn't seem fair at all. How you haven't snapped before now is beyond me. I hope the family are going to help with your list this week.

My plan was to whizz round Costco this morning but I think I've left my card in the other handbag which is back home - so blooming annoying. I'm back down in a fortnight and will do it then.

Yesterday I bought a supply of blank greeting cards which I'll write up for the year of birthdays, I've got very lax over the past couple of years about friends and I must make an effort to be a better one. I've got a bunch of lovely friends who I love dearly, and then we moved 200or or more miles away. We keep in touch my text / iMessage and a couple visit but more could be done by me.

Again, no idea what the day will bring. Mum is a little wobbly but insists on being in the kitchen all day and still won't let me help. She delights in cooking, baking and leaving the dishes for me. :rotfl:

I hope that everyone has a better day.

    Good morning everyone :hello:

I'm back to the not sleeping again so I may need some matchsticks to keep my eyes open before the day is out. Just having a quiet cup of tea with my hubby and the girls are all fast asleep. I think I have managed to persuade hubby to get rid of Sky and get a freesat box so he is researching them now. I am really dreading phoning Sky to cancel though as they will do anything to keep you as a customer. Oh well, I can't keep paying out so much money when most of the time we don't find much we want to watch on the tv anyway.

Too tired to concentrate at the moment so I will pop back later. Hope you all have a great day whatever you are up to, take care xx
  • Good Morning everyone, it's still dark enough here today to need lights on and miserably wet outside too which I think is going to stay for the day. He Who Knows is coming back this morning and we'll take lights off the trees and get Christmas back in the storeroom and loft without a shred of regret. Back to normal is GOOD! Food today is going to be Broccoli and Stilton soup and toast for lunch and slow cooker Shin of beef Chilli for supper, nice and easy, nice and normal. Washing done yesterday is dry now so the rest of the bedding and towels are in the machine and will go up in the utility room and that clears the laundry bin. I'm going to sit down today and meal plan for next week, luckily most of the Christmas food is used and I'll be able to start emptying the freezer again, it needs a defrost and is currently too full to do one.

CSARINA my heart goes out to you for so many reasons, families are complicated beasties and sometimes things go awry and people who shouldn't be are hurt. I suspect you are seen as the 'strong' one and the others haven't had the thought that you will be hurt by their actions and words, I think they'd be mortified if they knew just how much you HAVE been hurt and distressed by their actions. You will forgive them in the fullness of time, that's how a loving heart works and that's a family thing too but take a little time out for you and DOH after the funeral, a little reflection time and time to get your balance back and marshal your thoughts and come to terms with it all. We are always here for you, in spirit we're all with you and have a hand at your back and a hug round your shoulders 24/7 and our support always, stay strong and do what has to be done love, thinking of you, Lyn xxx.

Morning all. Cold wet and miserable here today so definitely going to be an indoor one. Was up just before 6 this morning so managed to get a bit done in the kitchen again. There's a pork loin joint in the slow cooker ready for tonight's tea. All the potatoes are peeled and chopped and in a pan of salted water and I've made up a salad for lunchtime with boiled eggs.

We had the finances chat last night, which never goes well as I always end up feeling like the baddie because I want to reduce spending. It would be so much easier if we were on the same page so to speak!

I need to start stripping beds and get the wm on the go but having a peaceful coffee first :) Hope everyone has a good day :)

    Morning everyone.

Hugs to all who need them.

Today is the last day off before we get back to normality and I think it's well needed for all in this household.

january is going to be a tight month for us. Luckily, we've paid most of our expenses, so it shouldn't be too bad. I went to the supermarket yesterday to do a food shop and spent £45 divided between both lIdl and aldi. We have quite a lot in the cupboards and january is a good opportunity to run down the cupboards and use up all of the food so it doesn't go to waste. We had a cottage pie for dinner so we are going to give the children the leftovers for dinner and me and OH will have something light.

I plan on using today to start knitting another scarf, which will be an Xmas gift for 2016 - I'm really motivated to start knitting again, so need to docs much as I can before I loose interest.

A quick question - could I melt Brie and add it to pasta to make a cheesey pasta, would anyone know please?
