Cat wees in litter tray but poos outside , why would this be?

Options
Have just got a cat flap so the cat now goes outside and always poos outside now but seems to still wee inside in his litter tray.

Wondered if anyone else had experienced this and if there is a reason this would happen and how can I convince them to wee outside too!?

Why do you want your cat to urinate outside? It is most likely your cat did not like pooing and weeing in the same tray (which is why a cat should have two trays), so now given the option they are toileting in a way that suits them better.

So where will your cat go to the toilet during the night or bad weather?

Outside of course, cant see this being anything other than normal ? His cat flap is always open (reads chip) to stop other cats coming in.

Cats do need access to a tray all the time. How would you feel about going outside for a wee in the rain? Cats also feel vulnerable while toileting so many will mainly toilet inside for this reason, especially if there are other cats in the area.

My cats were always trained to use the garden - I don't know anyone who has a tray inside unless a cat is ill . In fact when one of mine had an accident and had to stay in he was very unhappy to use a tray even when pristine and would sit looking longingly at the locked cat flap for ages before he'd use the litter tray.

OP start moving the tray closer and closer to the door - and then eventually move it outside and then remove it altogether. Your cat will soon get the idea.

I have had cats my entire life and only ever had litter trays for the kitten stage before they were going outside. With all of my cats it has been a natural progression over a period of a few months. They start going outside and just seem not to use the tray after a while. The last tray I left for nearly a year to allow access and the cat did not use it once in that time.

Not all cats are the same though.... OP your cat has shown a clear preference for weeing inside. Could you compromise by getting a smaller tray?

I'd not personally be without one, what if the weather was foul or your cat needed to go so urgently they couldn't make it outside? Having an indoor litter tray would minimise the chances of accidents in those situations.
