Need to know what will happen if my partner moves in with me

Hi all

I am living with my parents so I don't know what will happen if my partner (boyfriend) comes to move in with me.

I'm on the ESA support group. And my boyfriend is living alone atm but he cant afford to pay rent anymore he is on esa assessment rate since his SSP ended. The council have also suspended his HB. So we agreed that he can move in with me and my family.

What will happen to mine and his ESA if he moved in with me is he still a person in his own right or are we then classed as living as a couple?

My dad works full time and the house is his he pays a mortgage I do not own the house in anyway. He will be paying my dad about £25 a week to stay as board.

Oh I should also add that he will be having the spare room if it makes any difference.

Thanks in advance

Boyfriends\Girlfriends who live together, lodge together or rent together are classed as a couple.

Inevitably you will be classed as a couple, regardless of which rooms in the house you choose to sleep separately (as a couple) in. ;)

:) Okay so we should start claiming as a couple?

Will I have to go through the whole assessment phase again?

If your planning on living together then Yes, you should start to claim as a couple.

Unfortunately its very likely you will have to go through the assessment all over again.

The inference here is that she will have to come out of the Support Group and effectively make a new claim. That is not correct. Her partner being added to the claim does not affect her being in the Support Group in any way.
She will need to request a form ESA3, complete and return that. As her partner isn't currently working, just receiving ESA at the assessment rate, this amount will be taken into account against her claim.

So the money my partner receives will be taken out of my allowance?

There are too many unknowns to be able to give a definitive answer. We don't know if your partner has an entitlement to ESA Contribution based benefit, and we don't know if you are receiving Contribution based or Income Related benefit.
If you are both entitled to Contribution based benefit then your benefits will remain as they currently are.

in that case it will be a joint claim.
if the only expense is paying your dad £25 a week, you will manage fine

Which means that your boyfriend will have to change his claim to Conts only so he continues to get National Insurance credits. You will need to ask for a form ESA3 to add him to your claim. Your payment will increase by roughly £40 per week, which is the difference between the single person and couple rate.
