Great Wakering and Rayleigh on the other hand are very nice but suffer more in terms of train links

agree on the statement about wakering but rayleigh has its own train station, at the bottom of crown hill, and its a hub for a heck of a lot of buses too.

rayleigh is a nice place to be, the town covers the bases and its darn close to the a127 and you can easily get to the a130 and a13 in 10mins or so, if it wasnt for the a127 being such a pig all the time it would have been higher on our list of potential places to buy

I'd definitely recommend Great Baddow/Wickford/Rayleigh. I've grown up around this area (Wickford age 5-16, Chelmsford/Great Baddow 16+) and the schools in Wickford are okay! The colleges around this area are good too.
I'd avoid South Woodham mainly for the fact that it is quieter and not as many regular trains. You have to swap trains at Wickford to get to Liverpool Street.
Great Baddow is close enough to the centre of Chelmsford and not a bad area. Rayleigh is also nice but unsure of the schools.

Rayleigh has some nice schools. My cousin and his family live there and they have two children in primary school there. The two main secondary schools are Fitzwymarc and Sweyne Park. Both get good results, I think.

  • I live in Chelmsford city centre, my boyfriend owns a house in Springfield. I bought a buy to let in Springfield in December partially due to the Ofsted ratings of the local primaries, plus you have KEGS and Chelmsford High School for Girls with Outstanding Ofsted ratings for the higher levels.

Depending on what part of Springfield, the 56 bus runs around every 20 min (doesn't run late Fri/Sat nights if you're trying to get back from a night out in London on the later trains). The 55 is an express during the morning commute hours, it gets you in to the train station in around 12 min, depending on what part of Springfield you're coming from. My boyfriend cycles, he does the roads but casual cyclists take the side streets/paths behind the Uni. I'm not a keen cyclist but I will do that route.

One other point, a new train station is planned for this area. Granted, it's always a matter of funding etc. but current info has it opening in 2021.

This is partially the reason I went ahead with my house purchase. The current commute to the train station is 1.9 miles, but if/when the new station opens, it will be 1.2 miles, so a bit more palatable.

Southchurch is nice the only dark cloud is its proximity to the kursaal, which is damn rough, in fact so much so that a lot of pizza places etc refuse to deliver in the estate.

As stated pritlewell is nice, easy walk into town however its not close to the train line you require and it does get busy when southend play at home.

And nope i dont use the train as we both work at southend airport

re: Soutchurch - would you say nice part extends as far as south street... seen again lovely looking houses fairly reasonable, walkable to ctc southend east but is that wrong side of tracks for southchurch... looks ok road but long road as goes into central gets bit rougher looking.... Southend seems bit londonish in that respect - just a few streets can separate very nice to grimy
