    It doesn't add to the octane rating, it substitutes octane rating for the fuel it replaces...... Therefore getting rid of it reduces the octane of the fuel. Ethanol has a higher octane rating than petroleum, however because ethanol has a lower calorific value (energy), the "E" fuels are actually less economical.

    Gasoline 47.0 KJ/g or 11.3kcal/g
    Ethanol 29.7 KJ/g or 7.1kcal/g

    But..... Now this is just going to spark an octane/power debate again, from the fools that don't actually understand what octane ratings mean. So......
