British Gas direct debit increase

Options
I have been paying British Gas £53 a month by Direct Debit for electric only, On the 22nd they sent me an email, which I only read today, advising me that my DD would be increasing from Feb to ....£1000 a month!
I nearly died.
Went to check my account and my last reading in sept was estimated at around 305788 (estimated ) and expected that December would also estimated and a mistake.
I was shocked to see that they have put my new reading as 505790 approx and that they have listed it as read by meter reader...
NO-ONE has been to read my meter at all!
I cant believe it. I tried to call them today but they are closed.
What do people think is going on here and should I make a formal complaint?
My actual reading is actually far less than the September estimate.

Do you have an 'on-line account'?

If yes - enter meter readings regularly.

If no, then get one and follow 'yes' above ... :)

Your reading is probably more like 05057 and ignore the 88

When you ring BG just say 5057

Ps - have you a outdoor meter box ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

See if they change it - if they don't, make a complaint. If they ignore that or fail to take action, don't hang around and go straight to the Ombudsman as soon as possible.

NPower tried to raise my 86 year old mums energy from £42 to £132 per month, despite supplying regular readings and being less than £15 in debit.

The Ombudsman gave Mum £75 compensation. Even after his ruling NPower tried to change the amount again the next month, despite the Ombudsman agreeing that £42 was sufficient.

So he awarded her a further £75. They tried to alter it again the following month - when I emailed them yet again telling them that if they did we'd go straight back to the Ombudsman and we'd be more than happy for another £75, they changed it back to the £42 ROTFL
