Tried copying it from computer onto usb stick, put in DVD but the result was blank screen. I even managed to change the suffix to the same as a film which we did managed to save from the camcorder and does play, but no joy.
It seems the DVD player a Panasonic DMR-EX83 is happy to show photos but not videos from cameras. We have the same problem with a couple of small pocket digital cameras.
The manual's pages dealing with movies number less than that, though.
P.208 of the Canon manual - Movie format is MOV. Once you've recorded one, there'll be a .MOV file on your memory card. Assume this is what you copied to USB?
The Pana manual, pages 17 and 18, tells you it will play DivX, mp3/WMA audio, and JPG from USB.
So, on the face of it, you need some software that converts from MOV to DivX. Copy DivX to USB, and then play back in Panasonic. Changing the file name won't help. You need to convert the data to the right format
When consulting the manual, start with the Index. It's what it's there for.0 -

The camera is a Canon Power Shot SX40 HS.
According to the accessories page, there is an AV/composite cable (AV Cable AVC-DC400 ST) that should allow you to connect directly to the DVD player and record straight off the camera:

This would function the same way as I'm assuming you did with the older camcorder, hook the camera up to the DVD recorder then hit play on the camera to play the video back and the DVD recorder will save the video.
