Problem with camera and dvd player

Options
DH wants to transfer videos he has taken on his Canon Powershot Camera into the DVD player.

He has bought a HDM lead so can look at the video on the TV screen, but cannot find a way to save it on DVD hard drive.

Any suggestions

A DVD player doesn't record. A DVD recorder records. A DVD and a hard drive are different. Exactly what are you trying to record onto?.

Downloading onto a PC and then transferring to the back up medium of your choice (USB stick, DVD, NAS, cloud etc.) is usually an easier option.
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Yes sorry get totally confused with names of these things. I kept thinking it was video recorder the other day.

It is a DVD recorder and player with hard drive. We record stuff off the TV and play it back as well as playing discs.

Dvd recorders may have aux inputs. Connect to one of these and select that as a channel to record from. As above, if your pc has a dvd writer its easier to download the video from the camera in the same way you presumably move your photos to the pc and copy it to a blank disc

Video on a camera will probably be in a format that needs conversion for writing to DVD.

Does your PC have a DVD writing drive?

Yes it does have that so I could do that. I was just surprised you couldn't plug in and go.

DH has an older camcorder circa 2002 which you can plug in to the DVD direct and you can save the film.

The purpose of this camera he has now was supposed to be to take video as well as still shots so you just take out one piece of equipment rather than two.
  • Do your Camcorder and DVD Recorder have Firewire connections (the camcorder will probably have a mini/micro Firewire socket). If so, you can connect using that.

It has the advantage that, the Camcorder will respond to the actions of the DVD Recorder.

ETA: What recording medium is used by the Camcorder?

What does the User Manual for the camera have to say about plugs and socketry to connect to other pieces of equipment?

Absolutely nothing there is just one lead which came with it which is an interface cable.

The user manual is available on line but is about 100 pages and a bit of a mission to work through, so was hoping from an answer from someone in the know.

The camera is a Canon Power Shot SX40 HS.

Tried copying it from computer onto usb stick, put in DVD but the result was blank screen. I even managed to change the suffix to the same as a film which we did managed to save from the camcorder and does play, but no joy.

It seems the DVD player a Panasonic DMR-EX83 is happy to show photos but not videos from cameras. We have the same problem with a couple of small pocket digital cameras.
