Evening All
Welcome tighteningthebelt - I too have just moved house!!!
So, re my title here - what have I been buying - well, new house has fab new kitchen - but ceramic modern sink - and I am terrified I will chip it - so off to Lakeland (there is a store in MiltonKeynes) and have bought a drying mat and a plastic 'pebble' mat for within the sink!! I personally would never have had such a daft thing as a ceramic sink where you are almost firghtened to use it but hopefully I'll be OK now!!
Anyone else found that the excentricities of their new houses have required purchases???
Jackie O how much do you have saved this year for your IOW hols and is it more than last year?
Am NBI tomorrow as am heading back to Cornwall on the motorway. Will be popping to the local co-op to buy a 'meal deal' before I go - not spending out on the prices they charge on motorway - similary with petrol - will be topping tank right up at cheapo T!sco before I go :j
Frugal on folks!Aim for Sept 17: 20/30 days to be NSDs  NSDs July 23/31 (aim 22) :j
NSDs 2015:185/330 (allowing for hols etc)

Lyn funnily enough for spending cash I had only just looked into my holiday spending money and I have £620.09 in my holiday fund plus £78.91 in 'road kill' which consists of left over bits from my Happy Cash Stash and coins found in the road and money put in when I have saved cash with a coupon or tree
This will be more than enough for spending on treats and things on holiday for myself and my four grandsons.I pay for the holiday house rental and its usually paid for by February andDD and I share the ferry price between us and she buys all the food when we are away.We always have a nice 'blow out meal on the last night as by them most of our bought groceries are eaten(whats left over comes home with us and we divide it up between us:)
The 'road kill' cash pays, as a rule for any ice creams for the boys when we are on the beach (which we spend the most time on )
We forage for any blackberries if we can find some and the boys go fishing with their Mum and what they catch we eat.Last year we had some gorgeous sea bass which my son-in-law cooked with butter and chopped chilli,he is a super cook and loves practising his skills on us at holiday time.two weeks tomorrow and we will be off .The house we are staying in at Chale we have been to twice before and it is a lovely one with a big garden and plenty of space for the boys.
Glad you are settling in to your new house I bet you can't wait to get back there. We too take packed lunches when travelling and have our picnic on the ferry going over.We prefer it anyway as sitting on the top 'doggy deck is much nicer than being inside and stuffy. We like to prioritise what we spend our cash on when on holiday,so we do have lots of picnics and long walks .The main town of Newport will get maybe one or two visits ,perhaps if its raining we will go to the cinema there but in the main we prefer the quieter side of the IoW.I am looking forward to going back to the Garlic farm and treating myself to some of their delicious products They do a garlic chilli sauce that's to die for.I shall be stocking up for winter Also there is a craft /wool shop next to it called T&Js and I love mooching around buying wool and craft bits as Christmas pressies. DD and I may try to get a ride at the stables this year as well as we both like to horse ride, may take to boys and see what they think of it Last year we hired bikes and went along the old railway line between Yarmouth and Freshwater Best place to spot red squirrels there plus there is a lovely tea room at Freshwater. We always find lots to do there.

:hello:We are in and settled! Almost everything is done, just a few pictures looking for new walls here, two more boxes to unpack, and one cupboard to make neat (will be time consuming though). Thumbs up to my dad for all his help, and my son too, I am very grateful for all the help I have had.
So, time to refocus on normal life, and re-establish some healthy and careful behaviours, and refine and improve them where I can, learning from all the nbi gang as i go along.
A special lady I know says 'you don't have to own things to enjoy them' quite frequently... A good nbi motto which I repeat to myself often.
Currently using up shampoo (that makes my head itch) cleaning the loo.
A bookshelf that exceeds requirements in my new house has been split down into wood to be reformatted as shallow wall display shelving in the autumn.
Starting to slowly think about the garden, but no rush, next year would still be a success on that front! I'm hoping people still share plants round here. Some heavy stuff to do first, wild relentless nature has started to win!
Well, it's a pleasure to be here amongst you all. There are some pink lady apples ripening on a public footpath here, I'll pick us all one each when they're ready! Have a good weekend one and all.A bit of grin and bear it, a bit of come and share it
You're welcome we can spare it, yellow socks0 -
Evening folks
I hope Lyn and tighteningthebelt survived their moves without problems! Can totally relate to all the new-house-related shopping, there is always something or another coming up that needs to be bought or changed...
Am on a spending spree today... Went to the hairdresser, think I finally found a good one who also seems to know what she is doing. Wasn't quite sure about that with all the hairdressers I've tried out these last couple of years...
And ever since I came home I'm online shopping... But not just mindles spending but things I need.
I now have everything together regarding my friends wedding. Ordered the present, a voucher for babythings as she is expecting and like that they can buy a few things they still need and also finally found a nice yarn to knit a baby blanket. Have time till January but want to start soonish.
Managed to put an outfit together for the wedding with things I already own, but needed a black handbag as none of my bags is fitting my outfit and found a not too expensive one.
Then I also ordered yarn to knit myself a jumper and got some knitting needles too as I don't have the size I will most likely need. Oh and the cats needed food, so ordered that too.
But that is now all the shopping done for quite a while besides groceries and a meal out tomorrow as I will meet with a friend for breakfast.
Jackie, I'm sure your grandsons are very proud to have you as granny! I like to read how much you stick together as a family!
And well done on saving so much for your holiday fund!
blackcats, it is so tempting to go and get a take away but I think they are much nicer as treat than as a too-lazy-to-cook option.
Sibrie, great idea with the camping!
I also try to avoid having to buy food on the go when travelling as it is expensive and you never know if you can get something you like. When we went on holidays we took all the food for the journey with us as we just didn't wanted to have to search for a place to buy something first and also didn't wanted to pay the high motorway services prices for food. Since we have a good fridge in the camper van we then made sure that it was always stocked with a few essentials as there is nothing worse than arriving at a new place and having to figure out where to get groceries.Fashion on the Ration 2022: 5/66 coupons used: yarn for summer top 5 /
Note to self, don't buy yarn!0 -
Evening all
A very big WELL DONE :j to Jackie O for saving nearly £700 this year!!! Fantastic!! You could almost b uy another holiday with that
you and your family will have a fab time with that - though I have to say it sounds as if you would have fun anyway as what you enjoy and have taught your family to appreciate does not cost much!!
One of the things that I did while I was away was go to see the new Star Trek movie - it is much better than the last 'new' two. Simon Pegg co-wrote the script with an uber fan and so there is good plot, more character development and some threads picked up from other films. So if you are slightly Sci Fi fans then I recommend it!
Not Buying It - I am back in Cornwall and back to Frugal ways. Am going to have £10 per week for food and cleaning materials and £10 Happy Stash (thanks for the name Jackie O). My weeks will run Friday to Friday so August started on 29th July for me and so far have had 2/7 NSDs. Spent £11 in L!dil on Friday and expect it to last me about two weeks with a top up salad, milk etc on week 2.
I need so little else - apart from a washing machine and some grey paint to upcycle a small bookcase and a little drop leaf table that I picked up in the local car boot for £20 last month.
Frugaling forward!Aim for Sept 17: 20/30 days to be NSDs  NSDs July 23/31 (aim 22) :j

Glad you are in and settled Lyn You can start putting roots down and really enjoy your new life.Foraging season for berries will be with you soon with lots of blackberries etc to tempt you for wine, vodka crumbles and of course Jams.Even if you pick and freeze for using/cooking when the weather is cold, and you can't get out much (its what I like to do, as its a breath of summer on a dark November afternoon)
meeting new people before the winter sets in as well as there is nothing nicer than a smaller community for people to draw together.I know you have lots of interests and pastimes to keep you going but if like me you like to socialise a little ,living in a smaller more rural area is just the place.
I wish you the very best in your new home and I hope you will come on here and tell us about your ups and downs of settling in and how you manage to stay solvent and happy without spending too much cash
Cheers Lynn

Today I was tempted by a fabric doorstop... But I said no no no, I'm not buying it. :-)A bit of grin and bear it, a bit of come and share it

Hiya All
Thanks for your good wishes Jackie. Yes I am looking forward to berries season - have already spotted blackberry sites and am going to look for an elderberry place soon (wine and elderberry and apple jam!!). some of these will form Christmas pressies (am I allowed to think that far ahead???
tighteningthebelt well done in being disciplined. Can you make a doorstop yourself?? Use somat else?
Another NBI today - which was not hard as it was raining all day!Spent the day making L!dil meatballs in HM tomato sauce with pasta (which made 3 portions, two of which are frozen for another day) and shredding paperwork I have to keep loads of it cos of the work I did)
Am going to have a free walkies tomorrow if it doesnt rain and keep to an NBI day!
Am frugaling on! It actually feels far more usual and familiar and comfortable than all the rushing out and buying stuff I did up country! :T

My DD has a large beige coloured stone that one of the boys found on the beach a couple of years ago when on holiday, it must weigh about 2lb and does the job in keeping the dining room door open when the back door and windows are open wide to let a through draft in.Cost nothing and is being put to good use
:):) that's what I have taught my DGS I think, that virtually anything can be recycled/reused if you think laterally
:):)
As my old Mum would say 'cheap is good but free is better' :)Canny woman my mum:):)
