Not Buying It- A Consumer Holiday 2016

Just popped to Sainsbury's for some bits for DD to take back to Paris, teabags, shampoo, conditioner etc. and found myself in the 'sale' department and three minutes later some half price towels, an ornament and 2 systema microwave soup mugs had jumped into the trolley...
But whilst walking to the checkout I thought 'do I need this stuff?' ...so the towels and ornament went back, because no I don't need them, I've enough towels to reserve every sun lounger in the average Spanish hotel...
I did however keep the half price soup containers, as I'm planning on us taking homemade tasty soup to work for lunch.Well Behaved women seldom make history

Afternoon all...
Spend your day here today grrr but most of it necessary.
75 quid spent at lidl on food for the week and 25 quid at the phoographers on pictures of the kids. Would normally have nipped into over shops for "stuff" whilst in town but didn't bother today.0 -
I was tempted by an Approved Food email today, logged onto the site and started browsing but talked myself out of it as we already have more than enough food here without adding to it just yet.2016 Grocery Challenge January: £296.20/£300 February: £262.05/£3000

I kept up with this thread last year, and will follow this one.
Although, to me NBI is not actually Not Buying It, but it's about shopping mindfully. It is very satisfying to buy things after thought, care and consideration, so you know that you've got the very best for your money, and you have money left which you can put towards other things, like holidaysEarly retired - 18th December 2014

I followed the thread last year but will try and delurk this year. I am aiming to not spend mindlessly but cannot commit to not spending anything. I have unsubscribed to several mailing lists.
As far as possible I will use up what I have rather than buy more, I am also trying to declutter but have got rid of the easy stuff and now it is a case of slowly working through the books, yarn and other hobby equipment I already have rather than buying new.0 -
I've been having an internal debate with myself over a mobile phone...as well as fending off comments from friends and family
My mobile is 3 years old, it's a smart phone, battered & scratched but still works until I try to take a photo when it promptly switches itself off!
Everyone's told me it's time I upgrade my phone, and I'm not going to lie, I've looked at the shiny new ones, have been tempted to buy but then I keep thinking, it still works, someone else will take the photo if I don't. I only spend £10 a month on it and new phone will be £75+
So for now I'm sticking with it and resisting temptation!
I don't know what tariff/network you have, but me and OH have phones from Tesc@ Mobile for £7.50 a month with 250 mins/5000 texts/500MB - as we both have phones we also get another 500 Tesco mins each too - O2 Network.0 -
Day 2/366 of NBI. I have done the weekly shop and bought nine bars of Swiss chocolate in different flavours which were reduced to 38p. They are good until June and will make good gifts or used at Easter in lieu of eggs.
Beyond that I've done a short run and sorted out a load of recycling that I collected before Christmas which will be sent on to help various charities and made into new items. I've recently started volunteering in my spare time for a local green initiative.
Mr GBT needed a new purse- he found exactly what he wanted for a princely £2 from the charity shop. Mindful spending.

Hello everyone
So nice to see so many new faces here! But when the tread goes on so quickly I won't be able to keep up once I'm back to work next week....
Had my first two spends today, a very small groceries round for fruit and veg plus went out for breakfast but only had a cappu and toast with jam as we had a late lunch at my grannys later on.
Thanks for the ones who pointed out that NBI doesn't mean not buying anything and that everyone has different goals and views and priorities. For me NBI is mostly about buying things because I need them or really want them and not because I'm made to think that I need them and life will be so much better once I have them (although I think there are things that really make life better... Like well fitting bras or comfy shoes...)
My mini-goals at the moment are making January a supersaving-month to put money aside for a big bill. Then no clothes shopping until at least April, besides a pair of flat shoes for spring and a new pair of jeans (My only pair isn't looking too good anymore). That will be all I need at the moment. Cosmetics will be no buying until I run out of something which won't be until ealry March or so.
Had a good laugh about the 28 inch tv.... I don't have a telly and watch movies on my laptop which is I think 15 inch... Our whole family use to watch DVDs on an even smaller laptop and it worked fine.
Golightly, I'm sure it is easy to stop spending money on things you don't need when you know that this money will help you buy a house.
Nursemaggie, why do they think that a fridge and a freezer are better than both in one? Really don't see their point....
pm, say hello to the ray at the sealife center should there be any.
Could you buy the mobile and stick to the old contract? I got my contract cheaper a while ago because I wanted it with a phone I already had. Now that one broke and I bought a new one and when I use it 3 years I pay less than paying the higher costs for another contract and the smaller price for the phone.
Purpleposting, really like your signature, wise words!
mrs motivated, very well done on putting the things back!
So, will now sit down with a cup of tea, a movie (on my small laptop screen (-; ) and start knitting the first kids hat for charity for 2016.

Hi all, my name is rich, but alas not in reali life! Am new to the forum and also therefore this thread. After having got married last August and now hoping for our first addition to come on the horizon at some point this year cutting back on unnecessaries is a must for us.
Currently however having the challenge of my wife saying "but we can afford this", and I say whilst that's true, if we don't spend x on y we can then spend it on something even better or something we must have. still, it doesn't help having the Trafford centre on our doorstep.
Not sure how active I'll be, but will be here in spirit.
Best of luck and best wishes for the new year!0 -
Good evening everyone,
We bought a table and 4 chairs today ouch! I was a planned purchase that we have saved for and we don't have one. Dinner on a tray on your lap doesn't taste as good as sitting at a table.
I have to buy new clothes this week as i have lost weight recently and i look a scruff in my baggy stuff, they will be a mix of charity shop and supermarket so hopefully won't break the bank, i have a budget of £50 and don't intend going over it.
Not spent anything i shouldn't so far.
regards:j0
