pm2326 I too use those square chutney jars for all sorts of things.I have four at the moment on the top shelf of one of my kitchen cupboards .At the start of each month I put £6.00 in the window cleaners one, £20.00 in the history club one,£8.00 in the pub quiz one and £12.00 in the gardener/handyman's one That way I know I have the exact cash to pay the small bills during the month and don't need to take any cash from my food budget purse.
I think its a great idea to use them for herbs and spices as they will take up less space than those soppy little bottle I shall dig some out from the cupboard I think as I know I have several empty ones in there and decant some of my herbs and spices into a different one as they become available great tip I was wondering what I could use them for I have a hatred of binning glass jars if I can find an alternative use for them
Re being boredI would like to have the time, I agree too often older people get the 'Countdown mindset' and just sit indoors watching t.v. waiting for the inevitable shuffling off the planet.
I don't have time to do that I have far too many things to do,but I must admit now and again it would be nice to just 'do nowt for a little while' but then I'd probably get fed up quite quickly.
My youngest DGS Mikey said the other day 'Granny it must be nice not having to go out to work and just being able to have a lie-in when you want to' !!! I am one of those folk who once my eyes are open I am up and have never ever had a lie-in in my life. If I am in bed I am there because I am ill, giving birth or at deaths door:):)Even if I go to bed by 11.00 I still read for an hour or two at least before going to sleep and I am always up by 6.30 as a rule.
Still life is for living and I like to live it as much as I can:):)
Cheers chums onwards and upwards I am just off to watch the new War and Peace I recorded earlier and to finish another square of my charity blanket, no peace for the wicked in this house:):)

Tomorrow is the start of the big campaign to lose some weight and in the past I have done this by spending money on lots of things and expensive ingredients. I know there's no need to do this as once you get your brain in gear, it's as simple as burning more calories that you take it.
Having said that, I have signed up to a month of online ww with a money back guarantee if I lose 10lbs in 8 weeks, as I find it helps me to be accountable and I like having recipe ideas and support all in once place but I won't be buying branded foods and getting all the gadgets, I have good healthy ingredients in my fridge, freezer and cupboards, weigh scales, measuring spoons/cups and really the best thing is to plan my meals (helps with budgeting and reducing waste too) and then give myself more time to cook healthy and increase activity which will be walking the dog and visiting the local leisure pool.
I honestly think it's more about getting your head in gear than anything else, much like watching those spends and not getting drawn in to the advertising.
Good luck to anyone else on a weight loss journey and maybe see you on the ww threads also.
I'm trying to lose weight too and my son directed me to myfitnesspal which is available both on PC and mobile. The pared down version is free and it allows you to track what you eat and gives calorie intake along with salt, fat protein and sugar. Like all diets you have to find what fits with you and at the moment this one is working :j 5kg down and only! 15kg to go :eek:Aiming for a Champagne Lifestyle on a Lemonade Budget

I'm extremely proud of my thrifty ways
I get great pleasure in getting the best I can for as little as possible
I'm also very fortunate that so many of my friends have the same mindset as well. Don't get me wrong, I have ones who spend a fortune every week and wonder where their money has gone yet won't make the small changes that would make big differences , but hey ho, life would be boring if we all the same and hey, someone has to donate the good stuff to the charity shops
I joined a few fb selling pages before Christmas and managed to save a fortune on toys for grand daughter. All as new, at a fraction of the cost
Well I've spent nothing so far this year as I've fluonly second time in my life I've had it and I wouldn't wish it on my worse enemy. I feel as week as a kitten and alternating from freezing to boiling. Feeling sorry for myself today as I've woken up soaking wet, the bed is soaking ( sweat) and I'm home alone and don't have the strength to strip it so I've had to just leave it and hop in to a spare bed. Guess I'm going to have a lot of laundry when I feel better And whilst I need to lose weight, this wasn't how I envisaged going about it lol
It's lovely to see so many new faces - welcome.
Jackie, how did you get on with war and peace? I'm afraid I only lasted for about 20 mins0 -
Commiserations Suki. I had flu last winter and it was dire. I hope you start feeling better soon, but don't rush back to full activity, you will be tired and it's important to take it easy and get back to full speed gradually. It took a few weeks before I felt really well again.
pm2326, the oat pancakes sound fab. Would you be able to share the recipe? They sound good for packed lunches as well as as a breakfast idea.
I posted about a free printable download elsewhere, it's a handout which lets you evaluate the year past and also plan how you want the year to come to be, not just for goals but to set the tone for the year ahead. It's at yearcompass.com
If Santa didn't bring you a calendar this year, there are good websites for printing off month by month. No need this year, as I've been given two. One has gone into the office at work, and the other is cheering up the kitchen.0 -
Get well soon suki1964 people who complain they have flu and go to work have no idea how ill you are with the real thing they have never had it.0

Does a donation to the church during the Sunday Service count as "spend"? I feel it doesn't as it was not to buy anything for myself, in which case I had the second NSD of 2016. I would be curious to hear others' opinion on this! Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0

They don't sell indulgences anymore, so you certainly weren't buying anything
Remember, this thread is not about not spending and NSDs, but rejecting consumerism. I'm pretty sure that if you look at the teachings of the church they reflect a similar stance - after all, Jesus threw the moneylenders out of the temple... :cool:0 -
Looks like it's going to be a fast moving thread again this year!
Hugs to all who need/want them :grouphug:
Back at work later this week so getting some meals prepped beforehand. Need to pop to shoos tomorrow but only for a few fresh bits so will go to lidl. As that will be my first shop since 22nd dec think that's not too bad.
Got a few bargains in the sale, mostly to put away as gifts for the coming year.
Have good days all
