Money Moral Dilemma: Should I pay for my friend's stolen phone?

  • Certainly not! This "friend" would no longer be any friend of mine, if I were you.
  • Why on earth was your friend taking valuables onto a beach? Of course you don't have to pay for a replacement, people must learn to take responsibility for their own possessions. In any case, she didn't make sure that you had heard her request to look after her bag.

No - if they don't have sufficient insurance then bad luck. A friend would not be treating you like this
  • As you didn't acknowledge that you would look after it then it's not your responsibility.Don't be bullied into thinking otherwise.

No! Don't take the phone to the beach, or if you are going to, get one of those waterproof covers (saw people with them last year on holiday around their necks).

    In a word..... No!

For a start you didnt hear the friend ask and also if your silly enough to take valuables on a beach you should be prepared to look after it yourself.

If you are on a beach with friends and some go into the sea, whoever is left on the beach keeps an eye on everyone's stuff. That's basic friendship etiquette, and you would expect them to do the same for you without being asked. If this person can't claim on their insurance then you should compensate them as you were negligent.

So if a friend or neighbour's daughter for example, was babysitting your kids, FOR FREE, and she put the kids to bed at 8pm, and then fell asleep on the couch for half hour, and the house was robbed while she slept, and a mobile phone, several CDs, and a mini stereo was nicked, along with the telly out of the dining room, and 2 laptops; would you expect said babysitter to fork out a grand or more out of her own pocket to replace everything?

No of course you wouldn't; you would claim on the insurance. I know some insurances don't include mobile phones, but then if people are dumb enough to leave a £500 iphone on a beach, in the hope their mate will look after it for them, then frankly, they deserve to lose it. Why take an expensive phone on the frikking beach anyway !!!!!!?!
  • No. If your friend is so stupid as to take a 'phone to a beach, especially in Barcelona where theft is widespread, then they deserve to have it stolen: and suppose you had also wanted to go into the water. What would they have done to protect their 'phone then? That's an expensive lesson for your friend to learn, but not at your cost.
