Money Moral Dilemma: Should I pay for my friend's stolen phone?

  • No. If I were your friend and you had heard me, I'd still not ask you to pay. What's their priority, the money or your friendship?
  • I'm guessing you were all on the beach and all of a sudden someone suggested going in the sea and some of your friends all got up and started running towards the sea and this one thought - oh my bag and shouted to you asking you to look after their bag and you never heard them, they were so excited to run into the sea with all their friends they just assumed you'd heard - am I right?

So now you're being asked to pay them the money for their phone - why just the phone? Didn't they have cash in there? Other things that amount to lots of money? Why only ask for the phone money?

Anyway - firstly have they got travel insurance? Have they got insurance on their phone if it's so valuable and they cannot afford to replace it after going on holiday?

Why do they think you should pay?

Have you told this friend that you didn't hear them asking you to look after their bag?

Why didn't they make sure you'd heard first before running off into the sea with their friends, especially as you had your eyes closed - you could have been asleep?

Personally I wouldn't pay as if they've not got ins' for either travel or just the phone it shows they aren't planning ahead for their carelessness and they at least will learn from this experience to their cost. That's life.
  • Its a good job your ex friend didn't get pregnant or get someone pregnant because their contraception was in the bag.
You could be paying up for a long time

No, you should not pay. The friend should have ensured that you had heard them ask to mind the phone. Even then, had it been stolen it would not be your responsibility to pay for its loss. Travel insurance should cover the loss. However, taking a valuable item to a beach where thefts are common is asking for trouble.
  • No, it is unreasonable to expect someone else to take responsibility for your valuables.
  • It's Barcelona, notorious for pickpocketing and thefts.

Get them to claim on their travel insurance - you're not liable. That is, assuming they have travel insurance (in which case it probably isn't even covered as it isn't in their possession or in a locked secure area at the time of incident. Plus you would need police reports to back it up).

Absolutely not. Their belongings their responsibility. They should have insurance to claim from.

Who on earth takes a mobile phone to the beach anyway? I go to the beach to swim, paddle, body surf, count waves, skim pebbles, snooze, sunbathe, relax NOT READ FACEBOOK AND SEND BL**DY TEXTS
