All New YNAB

Options
Has everyone seen the new YNAB. Its now subscription based and web-only. It has also changed the way some of the budgeting works and I must admit I am struggling with it a bit, particularly the credit card section. Anyone else tried it yet?

You can stick with YNAB 4 which will be supported until the end of 2016.

I read about it last night and it confused the hell out of me... Plus I don't like the idea of a subscription model, not very MSE or DFW! I've just bought YNAB4 in the past month so shall stick to that for now. Although they say they won't officially support YNAB4 into 2017, I'm sure it'll still function properly way beyond then. As long as the iPhone app still works, I'll still be using YNAB4.
Aiming to pay off £50,312.94 in less than 3 years - Starting from December 2015
Current debt total: £32,756.02 (as of 1st March 2018)
Date Free Date Aim: Summer 2019 (8 extra months needed :( )
  • How much is the subscription?
  • its $5 per month or $50 if you pay upfront for a full year. So whatever that means in £ when you buy. You can only do a US$ transaction.

I'm quite happy with it as I have a Chromebook and YNAB4 wasn't compatible with it. I'm glad it's web-based so it works will all devices.

I think you can get a 10% subscription saving if you sign up before 31 Jan.

I'm still undecided whether to go for the $45 a year or $5 a month though...

Also just started having a look at it, interesting new approach. Like others, I seem to be being forced into more and more subscriptions, not a fan of them. What I've discovered so far...

Credit Cards now operate in a "when you pay, it's a category transfer from whatever you bought's category to "Ready to pay the credit card" category. Then, when you pay off the credit card (or less...) it deducts from that category. TBH I was happy running the credit card as "just another account" as I pay off in full, I think the new option is to help out those who don't pay in full.

Existing users Can't import from YNAB4 yet, performance issues, so just keep using the existing app.

Mobile Apps Do work "offline" as before, and you can edit budgets now even on iphone. Pleased about this, if they didn't, it would be a deal breaker for me (I often don't have internet)

Reporting Not got this far yet, I hope it's there, I set my next years budgets based on last years averages.

Good luck to all who give it a look.

Out of curiosity I decided to trial the new version of YNAB this morning. I like some of the new features like the goal setting which helps keep you on track but as far as i can tell you can no longer import bank statements which is a feature of YNAB 4 I really like when reconciling my accounts. YNAB 5 allows users to connect directly with their bank accounts but not all banks support this feature (it's mostly just US and Canadian banks that support this) and some people (including myself) aren't comfortable with giving YNAB login details so will have to enter transactions manually.

Edit: The YNAB 5 app does take up a lot less space on my iPhone compared with the YNAB 4 app, and I don't have to have the Dropbox app installed to make YNAB 5 work.

    The jury is still out.

This when you pay cc feature is nice

This is why the new version lasted approx 10-15 seconds via macbook last night.

Thanks I won't be upgrading until the migration feature from existing ynab4 works.

Didn't get a chance to consider the new subs cost...is it a fiver per month?...don't think i'll be paying that.

If you have an existing YNAB4 licence then a YNAB5 subscription will cost you $45 a year which works out about £2.50 a month.

I'm back with some more discoveries:
    1) Can't find reporting, think it's planned for the future - not so bothered about this at the moment;
    2) The killer for me - the "red arrow" is gone. This is where you "carry over" a negative budget balance. Apparently, you should now cover the spending and then sort it when you're reimbursed. Found several discussions with plenty of "my opinion is all that matters", but sadly I was using this in a particular way for complicated work expenses, and those suggestions of "use memo" etc don't work for me when I travel weekly, expenses are submitted and paid within a month, I have to use cards and foreign cash, and I need to track it all easily (bearing in mind you don't see more than a month a time now.)

So sadly, I can't use it at the moment I don't believe (I will email them in case I've missed something). I know about the "it's spent" part, I have a master category for expenses with two sub categories - one for the expenses, and one which I use as a cover buffer to ensure it's funded. So the Master Category is never below zero. As someone who gets paid 26th month, I'm quickly looking at a funded budget that is in the next month, with last calendar month's outflows not visible in the new design.

Anyway, happy new year all :)
