Best basic bank account?

  • The 'difference' is that the word 'basic' implies a certain train of thinking / judgement. I have people staring at my card in McDonald's when I pay with a basic card.

Some wouldn't care, others do- but banks seem to like staining their basic debit cards with the stamp of 'not worthy of a full current account' - bar Barclays

McDonald's staff staring at your card ? If it seriously bothers you, you could just not go to McDonald's. Or pay cash for your unhealthy sins.

It is free if you don't pay for it. Doesn't mean there are other circumstances where you do pay for features.

So it's free even if you have to pay for it in certain circumstances? Really, if it's free it is not paid for under any circumstance. Conversely, if it is paid for under certain circumstances then there is not a cat-in-hell's chance that it is free. Or is your definition of "free" different to mine?

Which basic account would you recommend? All I need is an account that doesn't charge me to have it (no thank you Santander...)
    Thanks!

Are you sure Santander charges for their basic account? http://www.santander.co.uk/uk/current-accounts/basic-current-account

You could try looking on the right at the MSE news about the new fee free bank accounts.

If it only charges for going overdrawn then it is in fact free of charges as long as you don't go overdrawn.
