Finally got round to putting the straw out for my strawberries today. All the rain last week has meant that the ruddy slugs have got in there and beaten me to the first ones beginning to ripen. Have put some slug killer down (environmentally friendly) and lobbed the slug attacked ones onto the lawn for the blackbirds to find. Hope that there will be some left for me. I'm not so sure that putting raspberry canes in the same raised box was a good thing, they're coming up all over the place and shading the strawberries.

    I'm a carb lover I'm afraid!
I was gutted in 2007 when I was diagnosed coeliac. Unfortunately I replaced all gluten containing items bread pasta etc .with the glutenfree alternative which have all kinds of horrible things added to them . It always makes me laff when people say they are buying glutenfree stuff cos it's healthy!!!

:) Gakk! Gluten-free stuff is disgusting. I like things which are naturally gluten free such as veggies and seeds. I don't miss bread at all, and I was a major breadhead.

Guys, I've been running amok in the kitchen cabinets, a 6 ft run which is only 10 inches deep. I now have 3 foot of completely clear shelf, whee! It's drying out now after a clean but I will be using it to house some stuff which has been living out on the counter to my great relief.

Bear in mind that my kitchen is only 6 ft square, so this represents a huge proportion of the available space. I'm on a roll.

For those on the low carb/gluten diets I have been reading that you can make "toast" out of slices of sweet potato cut into 1/4" slices and popped into your toaster. Haven't tried it yet but have bought a potato in preparation. Will let you know how I get on, or if anyone is inspired to try it please let me know thanks xx

I like sweet potatoes. ......but if I wanted toast it would be bread that goes in the toaster, low carb or not ! ;)

I also listened to the Food Programme with interest, I'm going to go back and listen again as I only picked it up halfway through. It's all making a lot of sense to me. I'm just anxious about cost, one of the reasons I eat pasta, rice etc is that they're cheap and home made lentil curry is one of my standbys; I suspect low carb is going to be a bit more expensive.

We have found very little difference in household food budget. We eat a lot less bread pasta rice and potatoes and I have stopped my morning porridge. We have never had sugar in tea etc. Like GQ says money being saved as clothes that were not being worn have now come back into use:D

:) There's suddenly a rush of info in the mainstream media which supports the whole low carb/ healthy fats diet, rather than the heavy carb/ low fat diet which has been dinned into us for the past 30 odd years as the healthy option.

It's quite astonishing, there's something new virtually every day. Only it's not new, this stuff has been out there in books and medical papers for 10 + years.

The lastest is that there is no correlation between high cholesterol and heart disease and that statins are worthless. Their sales are worth billions each year to Big Pharma, tho.

I use my common sense; I cannot sustain my energy on carbs. Carbs send my blood sugar haywire and give me the shakes every 2 hours. They make me crave more carbs and over-eat and gain weight.

I also notice that every single vegetarian of my acquaintance who is in early middle age or middle middle age, is obese. As in BMIs up about 40 +. Yet they're adamant that they're eating right, they're keen cooks, well-educated professionals. And yet each time I see them they're getting bigger and bigger and bigger - it frightens me what will become of them, particularly since one of the gang is currently being treated for bowel cancer.:(

Metabolic syndrome is the natural inheritance of low fat eating, and it co-travels with depression and any number of life-limiting illnesses. And we were sold this as a healthy lifestyle. Even Ancel Keys, whose doctored research was used to start the whole thing rolling, recanted in 1997 (if memory serves). Madness!:(

Have you read "Trick and Treat" by Barry Groves. it's quite an eye opener.... Though I don't agree with everything he says. And bear in mind he passed away a few years ago of a heart related complaint - albeit allegedly a genetic condition.

I am getting a cold, and I have two very busy weeks ahead! Trying to kondo the cold before it settles by drinking thyme tea (boiling water over a sprig of thyme fresh from the garden), and gurgling with it.
Last Friday the local Belgian WI had a secondhand ladies' clothes sale, and I got six items for €7! One skirt I wasn't sure about, and dh said he didn't like it, so that is already in the cs bag in the attic. I have to make sure I spark joy in my dh ;)
One bottle of white wine was kondoed...into the sink. There are more and more types of alcohol I cannot drink, but this was the first white wine that gave me palpitations. Too bad, but not heartbroken. I can still drink the a.ldi ros! :)

interesting, I thought I was unusual getting palpitations from wine. But I think it's the sulphite content.

i also find that if i drink some wine, and then have a cup of tea or coffee (even decaff) I end up virtually unconscious on the sofa. Even if i have only had a glass. If i don't have the tea or coffee then i am fine. And it isn't caffeine as I drink rooibos tea which is a herbal tea. Chinese food gives me a hangover - with or without alcohol.

OH isn't happy that I have painted the cd rack he made at school :o OOps. I am going to repaint it brown, it's a bit errr pink at the moment...:rotfl:

  • This is fascinating. I've noticed that drinking wine sometimes makes me feel odd, as if my heart is racing, but I couldnt believe it was really connected, especially as it's not all wine. So it's a real thing? I'm gobsmacked.

BBC Breakfast running a story this morning regarding commercial storage space - ie the storage units you pay for. Figures been quoted are that 70 % of the available storage space in Europe is in this country:eek: And whilst I was picking my chin up off the floor I am sure I heard that 70% of that is used for 'domestic storage':eek: That is an awful lot of 'stuff' They are giving some decluttering tips later in the program but I will already on the road so wont see it..........I am sure we dedicated kondoites could give them a few:rotfl::rotfl:

Morning all, I hope everyone is as well as they can be.
Going to get my grey roots and split ends Kondoed this morning then hoping to get into the attic. I've brokered a swap with dd2 if I can find the extra bits for our set of bunk beds ie ladder and safety rails. We are going to swap her the bottom bunk her brothers in, the top bunk that's in the garage (it's only been there a week it was the spare room bed before we swapped ds2s room over.) the we can have their spare bed for ds2 which they haven't got room for. Hopefully this swap will also mean they can get rid of the set of roll under beds at the two step grandchildren are in at the mo which take up too much floor space. While in the attic I'm hoping to find the draylon/fake velvert covered frame and headboard for the waterbed we had 30 years ago has died in storage lol. I said to Dh last night that by now the thick foam under padding would certainly have started to deter ate so there really didn't seem any logical point as to why it was up there. Ds2 is on exam leave today so I'm hoping to get it all down do it can be disposed of even if it means ripping the covering off and getting the wooden frame recycled seperately.
Got some phone calls to make as well and work at lunchtime.
So should have a productive day.

Enjoyed Sewingbee last night really liked the garment of the week winner but sorry to see another nice likeable person leave.

    Have a joyful day all.

Igamogam, whilst desparing over the amount of stuff we were moving for dd2 I trying to rationalise it with her that if she had to pay to put any of this stuff in storage would she do it. And if it wasn't worth paying money to have someone else store it for her she shouldn't be letting it take up room in her house as she will basically be paying the mortgage out for this stuff to be filling up her lovely new home. I live in a small town and we have two large and busy storage companies set up in what where factories here. Recently one of them opened a pop up shop because someone hadn't paid their rent so they'd got in the u it and sold off all the stuff. I never felt the need to go but ds1 said it was like the contents of a removal van with all random stuff- old games systems ornaments and gadgets.
Dd1 is more brutal as far as she is concerned if something gets boxed and you haven't needed to go in that box for a few months you don't actually need it. I don't think she has anything in her house for Justin.

:) Some acquaintances get wine brought back from France by a pal who lives over there. Its in a winebag format and they get it straight from the winery - as in, out of the vat and into the winebag, boxed and into the back of your car.

Everyone who drinks it doesn't get a headache or a hangover, no matter what quantity is drunk and in combination with what other foodstuffs or drinks. Yet they always do when drinking wines, even wines of the same grapes, which have been bottled and shipped here.

Gotta be some kind of preservative, I reckon.
