I never did bother reading "Fifty Shades of Grey"...........sounded like a lot of old tosh to me and I didnt think the male actor whose name escapes me - yes he is that memorable - in the film was up to much.....:rotfl: Not my idea of a heart throb;)

Glad that it was not just me then!

Big sis has taken the girls out so I decided to go in the room of doom ... The eldest's room. We did venture in last night. I have am there on the pretence of a spring clean, one bag of rubbish so far and I mean toffee wrappers etc. I have collated her other stuff for her to go through, more than a shelf of toiletries another with nail stuff. Enough trainers for a centipede. I am dying to cull this but as she is not with me I already feel I am invading her personal space. She is turning into the 'old' me.

It is a lovely spring day so washing on line, windows open which gives me a great mood to just go for it. Can't believe it is not lunch time yet!

Give me Tom Hiddleston in the "Night Manager" (Bbc1 tonight) or Doug Henshall in Shetland any day.......but I digress......

Maybe I should jump on the simplicity bandwagon and write a decorating/lifestyle guru type book "Fifty Shades of White". :rotfl:

Lol, give me Hiddles or Cumberbatch over Jamie Dornan any day of the week!

Another vote for a white bedroom. Ours is in the rafters as we have a loft conversion, it contains two tall bedside wooden drawer towers, a double bed and mirrored wardrobe doors that are the height of the room and face the windows so they reflect the sunlight. It's so light and airy.

  • Wow, some very thoughtful posts since I last checked in, especially Lessonlearned. It's quite a release to burn stuff rather than just throwing it out, I don't want to clog up my woodburner but there have been a few items that needed to be destroyed with some reverence and symbolism.

White bedrooms .... hmm, mine was painted white when I moved in (the entire house was white apart from the kitchen). It felt cold and dull, I have colour in the curtains and bedding but it wasn't enough. I painted the longest wall a sort of heather. I'm currently pondering on repainting or maybe papering just one wall.

:) I like white walls too, and have them in the bathroom. The rest of the flat is a pale warm yellow, with white woodwork. Except the kitchen where the few bits of wall visible between white cabinets and white goods are strawberry mivvy pink.

I chose a warm yellow over white because there are low levels of cold light here, I'm at the foot of a tower block shaded by other tower blocks. The warm yellow is attractive and I have no reason to change it.

Simplified my allotment in less than two hours by doing a dump run with two bags of weeds, forking through and area of ground creating another bagful, and coming home with a binbag of non-degradable carp which has blown in from other people's plots.

I paused at the foot of the plot to admire my handiwork. Gordon Bennett, but has that lottie come a long way since 2008........ proof positive that a stubborn woman can always win against carp, one piece at a time.

I wanted my bedroom white but DH suggested soft apple green. He won. It has exactly the light, airy feel that I wanted and looks brilliant. I really love it.

Am trying to save for a yellow living room. It will mean new carpets and sofa though so will be a way away.

Just sitting here with my coffee after a nice healthy lunch.

Casting my eye round I can see another black bin liners worth of stuff egging me on.........I've loaded 4 bags into the car for tomorrow's chazza run. There's always room for one more. ;)

I think this is getting addictive........:rotfl:

Yes burning all that old medical stuff felt cathartic and symbolic. Shredding just wouldn't have had the same sense of occasion.

Last week I got rid of the throws and blankets and cushions which were used in the nursng home. Although they were still nice they just held too many painful associations and unhappy memories. They definitely didn't give me joy.!!

Thank you for all the positive messages this morning.
Karma- just ride it out, you'll make it. In the meantime try to look after your health as best you can. Rest, sleep, healthy eating, a little gentle exercise on the days you can manage it, a bit of Kondoing here and there. Get out in the sun, potter about in your garden.
Absolutely, lessonlearned. The first sentence is a kind of motto for me, it helped me do things I would never have chosen to do, but I had to, as they occurred. I was widowed suddenly at 45, with a young family. Years passed and I thought I was coping well, but for some reason I was still in a stuck place.

Once I started Kondoing I realised that I was still hiding behind the long delayed task of going through everything I have, either owning it and enjoying it, or releasing it to someone who could. It had become a kind barricade to hide behind, an excuse not to change things that niggled me which I had learned to tolerate rather than deal with them. Until I did something about that I couldn't feel free to move on. It will sound strange to anyone who hasn't either lived with a hoarder or had a problem themselves with parting with things long outloved but stuff still weighs on the mind even if it's stashed out of sight. it's a constant niggle, an unsolved problem, diverting the mental flow - and making the everyday tasks of finding things and putting them away again so much harder than it need be.

I was surprised to find that in addition to clearing komono and kipple, the task also included distancing myself from a few members of my extended family, who were draining the life out of me. Like you I have health issues and am having to pace myself, take a rest when I need it and sometimes I just need peace and quiet and time to think. On days when I am under the weather, it takes all my energy just to get through a day.

    Spot on again, Charis.

I found that too, Stashing things away out of sight doesn't help either. I didn't like those throws and cushions but couldn't bring myself to let go. My husband made the cushions as part of an attempt to keep his fingers flexible and just thinking of parting with them made feel guilty and yet they made me so sad to look at them. They would make me cry. Even putting them away so I couldn't see them didn't help.

I think even when it's out of sight "stuff" is still there at the back of our minds, in my case taunting me. I feel so much better now that they are gone. The cushions were made from tapestries of Winnie the Pooh and his chums. I'm sure a child somewhere will love them.

I too have kondoed some family members and toxic friends and acquaintances..........:rotfl: - who needs them. ;) Like you say we don't need people in our lives who are energy drainers.

My OH wants our living room pale yellow and I want it pale grey or green. I'm a little concerned that a warmer colour will shrink the room as part of the reason I think it looks so big is that it's currently white and we have high ceilings. He's concerned that grey will make the room feel cold.

It's a Georgian flat but the living room just comfortably fits a corner sofa, a two-seater sofa and a coffee table.

Do you think yellow shrinks your rooms to make them cosy or not?
