Thank you so much CLF - makes much more sense loving the website in general :D I can feel a purchase coming on :o

    No problem :)

One thing that I would warn you about though that tripped me up - even if a yarn is the same weight (perhaps both DK), if you substitute say an acrylic yarn with a cotton yarn, the cotton yarn is heavier over a set length, so a 100gr ball of each won't be the same length. You should be able to find the how long the suggested yarn is per ball and compare it to your substitute yarn.

This never occurred to me while I was making small things but became a problem when I was buying yarn for large things.

  • May I ask a quick question about YNAB?

Do you have to pay for it? I took a quick look but it seemed like it wasn't free.

    Thanks in advance.

I read this thread everyday without fail. U r all so inspirational! I find very rarely that I have anything to post though. I generally eat all meals from stores everyday n try to save money where possible but it doesn't feel worthy of writing on here.

Like you I often feel I don't have anything to write and often feel I am repeating myself day afterday and then I go for stretches where I don't manage to post, but I priorities reading daily, missed Christmas and Boxing day as I was to busy to go online. But please start posting dizzyblnd as what to you is routine may be inspirational to someone else.

    Today:
    NSD
    Open curtains fully
    Close curtains before dark
    Eat from stores
Entertain family for free, books, boardgames, lego
Turn off all lights and appliances not in use
No heating on, possibly light the multifuel stove later and burn some free wood

DNMS sorry to hear about your daughter being unwell and how that is effecting you.

  • Hi everyone

Dawn - thanks for the kick off :A

Wow - nice to see the thread so busy with new posters. :T I think everyone should post even if they think it's repetitive. :D

Jonno - defo just pick up any yarn of the same weight. Some patterns give you the gauge as well - so you could try knitting a little square of the yarn first of all. (I never do this though - I just wing it... :p)

tryingtocutback - yes, you need to pay for YNAB after the free trial but I think it's defo worth it. For the new version it's $45 a year or $5 a month - think the old one was $60 one off but they will stop supporting that after a while. If you don't want to pay anything you can still sign up for their 9 day course and do all the online classes. HTH

DNMS - big hugs my dear - I know it's hard for you with your dd but things will swing round again I'm sure. :grouphug:

I'm hopefully not up to much today as got a spendy NYE coming up!!! Friends have booked a steakhouse and then a cocktail bar...So much for a house party... :o Need a bit of a budget rejig for this one!! Still really want to go as I haven't seen them since Feb and one friend lives abroad.

I'm reading this guy's blog about passive income http://goo.gl/TiZtU

Doing a bit of biz prep/advertising a workshop I'm running in Jan and classes for the new year.

Have a good day everyone

Well I never knew that! Makes complete sense though. Thank you! :T

BTW - I can't believe your niece. 'O M G!' (as my niece would say!)
  • For those of you that use YNAB is it worth the cost i.e. Have you saved more than it cost you. Also do any of you 'share' it with you partner, I really want something that DH can both use together. TIA

Jonno - Re yarn. I 2nd what others have said. I frequently substitute yarns by just using the same weight. A DK yarn will pretty much do any DK pattern. Ditto 4-ply, aran, etc. Like CLF, I always look at yarn length too. Check how many metres per ball on the recommended yarn & make sure the figure is at least the same on the substitute yarn you are proposing to use. It's bigger items where this is important, as you could find you don't have enough to finish a jumper & the dye-lot you used is now unavailable.

CLF - Shocking attitude to money! Anyone with that attitude who is not earning a huge salary will soon fall by the wayside in terms of staying solvent, I'm afraid.

DNMS - Sorry it's been difficult with your DD over Christmas. I had a friend years ago who had a similar condition & she would always aggressively blame others when in a chaotic phase. I think it was almost a kind of coping strategy...that none of it could be her fault (it invariably was as she made poor & impulsive decisions, including putting herself at risk through ill-thought out behaviour) so it must be someone else's. Hope things calm down soon for you.

    Hi Everyone

Thank you Dawn for the start.

Determined -I'm very sorry to hear things have gone badly again with your daughter. It must be so very hard for you and DD. I wish I had something good to say to you. All I can say is I think you are amazing for sticking by her and taking in your DGD. Hugs.

Carrie - your niece sounds so deluded. Sadly. I hope she can gain some financial sense from you.

Hello to everyone new. I agree with the comment that there is no such thing as an exciting list or a boring one. We are all just talking and if someone's list helps another poster then that's great. Don't feel you can't post whatever you like. Even 1 thing.

On the frog and toad back to London as I type. We stopped into Mr S on the way to buy our food for the journey. It's so much cheaper than doing the services. Also had a think about what I'd left in the fridge before we came away, and planned dinner around that. So it will be a cold meat, cheese, saut!ed potatoes and garlic bread kinda meal.

We used £20 of xmas money to fuel the car and got nectar points on that.

I checked both sets of banking this morning.

Got a 26p brand match coupon in Mr S. Will add to the wombling score.

    By for now.

    Hello Wednesday Savers,
    A few useful bits today:
*Last laundry load of the week overnight on cheap tariff.
*Loaf in breadmaker. No need to buy flour this week as Mum popped a lovely bag of stoneground flour from a local watermill into our Christmas goodies box.
*Making good headway into using up leftovers. Last of the sausage rolls & cheesy rolls for lunch plus some l/o yoghurt. Will be using l/o wensleydale with cranberries in tonight's pasta bake followef by Christmas Cake for dessert.
*Packed picnic for a walk tomorrow - 2 little quiches made last night with leftover pastry & ham, the last 2 pieces of Christmas cake & the last 2 star biscuits to sneak out in the coffee shop.
*mr f volunteered to get the grocery shopping a few days early as market on. Budget £47. He spent £38, including £16 on a big leg of lamb from butcher. Cheaper ones in supermarket but only Nrw Zealand & we like to support our UK farmers. Updated budget.
*Postman brought next 2 £10 Ipsos vouchers....one each. Shall add mine to my signature as we are still (just) in 2015.
*Free Guardian & free coffees in Waitrose.
That's it for today. I have to go to a meeting tonight & I don't feel like it at all as it 's absolutely blowing a gale here & I'm also feeling grottily hormonal. The wind is howling around the house & down the chimney & we don't live anywhere near the North West where the storm was predicted to hit. Cat is glued to the sofa. Only prepared to venture out thru his cat flap for absolute essentials!
Hope north westerly frugalistas are withstanding the storms.
