    Get a job guiding Santa's sleigh? :D:D:D

I don't think the other reindeer would appreciate being covered in phlegm and snot in my trail and the dizzy spells would probably interfere with the direction of the sleigh..but hey; if it did work out I could always do with a bottle of sherry/wine/whatevers left behind for santa...

Thanks for all the tips and ideas! They're really helpful!

I was aware that petroleum generally isn't good for skin but being that it's been the only thing to not make my face feel like it's on fire and my eyes stream (trust me, Max Factor do not make waterproof mascara!) I'd long given up looking for anything that wasn't just an oil based barrier to try to at least prevent further damage as much as possible. But I am also not a fan of Vaseline or other manmade stuffs as they tend to cause more harm than good in the long run.

I'd tried a facial cream with Calendula by Weleda but again really stung but have just tried another I had by Weleda which was for chapped skin (with white mallow) and though was for faces said it could be used for nappy rash and it's not been causing my skin to sting anywhere near as much!

Thank you to those who had suggested nappy creams designed for babies nappy rashes and etc, I'd not thought of this! It's been the first thing I'd tried and the only thing I can use other than the Vaseline and this is great.

It's the Mallow face cream (lilac tube) if anyone is interested and for the first time I've not found the skin under my nose feeling tight and dry and needing to launch for more Vaseline :) Maybe not so suitable for outside wear as it's very white and I look like I've been drinking brandy cream by the carton! But for night time it's perfectly fine.
I've not tried the heel cream suggestions yet but wouldn't they be the same as Vaseline and so a barrier rather than something which could mend the problem? I will look at what's inside the product first but could be useful for the day time as they do tend to be transparent.

I've not seen nipple creams but will keep an eye out for them in Boots; thanks for the suggestions.

I don't think I'm all fixed yet and will still need to be very careful to use balm tissues (I'd been using Boots and Tescos own version of "soft" tissues as the balm ones are so pricey but I normally use the basic or value type so for me is a bit of a luxury!) I started using the softer tissues a week ago, the whole issue actually started way before then so I've no doubt got some damage to repair.

At least the cold is on it's way out (I think...!) so hoping I'll have a more neutral coloured face by the end of January at least!
  • I swear by Vaseline for this. I put it on when its hurting, and then I put some on at night before I go to sleep. It seems to help the skin stay hydrated and heal faster.

Thanks for these ideas. I'd been using Vaseline but it only seemed to stop the stinging feeling for about 30 minutes before I needed to reapply and that was before I had to start blowing my nose almost constantly! I wasn't getting anywhere with it because the drying was getting worse. Same with the 8 Hour Cream which is pretty good for chapped areas...apart from noses I think! The coconut oil just wasn't dense enough to make any difference. It didn't stop any stinging and didn't help moisturise. Maybe great for other less dry areas but I think maybe my skin was quite severely chapped and the skin was cracked.

I've managed to get a grip on things now I think, whilst my nose does still feel a bit sore and is still a little red just below my nose, the area isn't stinging anywhere near as much and the cracked parts are healed pretty much. I think the biggest thing to have helped has been the weather not being as harsh to be honest. The constant wind and almost constantly needing to use tissues were just causing problems let alone just maintaining my skin. The tissues and applying things I think were possibly making it worse! Once I didn't need to keep using tissues and having my face blasted by the wind things have gotten much better. Though I know that's not so good for any others reading looking for a cure, it is at least a good MSE result (no money required!)
  • I find that using a folded kitchen towel and wetting it with cold water is very soothing when you have a cold and your nose is chapped and sore. Then a dab of Vaseline afterwards.

    Thanks,

It was the Vaseline making it worse I think- it was drying out my skin. Vaseline works well once in a while but not every day/several times a day as it stops skin from working properly and so things dry out.

I had been using Sudo cream which helped more than the Vaseline when I went outside as it didn't dry up the way Vaseline did, but it also left a white streak and made me look like an extra at a kids party mixed with someone who had just come from a club toilets...

I'd suggest anyone in my position makes sure they treat the cracked skin rather than just covering the area against the elements. There are few things that will speed up healing other than your own immune system, all it seems exists are things to help protect the area so the skin can do it's own thing.
