Simple payg credit card

Options
Hi,

looking for a simple payg cc for my niece who is going travelling for 6 months later on in the year, Ideally want 1 that could be topped up at a post office and without the card being present, have had a google & it seem that card has to be present to top up via PO or paypoint etc, don't really want hassle of bank transfers as I don't do online banking (& other family members will be helping her out as well),

any ideas or suggestions gratefully accepted. :)
ANURADHA KOIRALA ??? go on throw it in google.

Is your niece over 18? Does she have her own bank account, or could get one? Do you and others wish to provide funds to her during her travels?

The best prepaid solution for travelling is the Revolut prepaid Mastercard, but she will need her own means to top up this card or (I believe) any other.

don't rely on the above for a child travelling abroad, they have a habit of blocking access to your money for no reason, and refuse to deal with you.

Skrill? I use mine all the time, you can topup online (free with maestro) or if you know someone with a skrill account they can transfer for about 0.5%.
Its a mastercard they issue, costs £10

Paypal also do one, she just needs an account, you can then xfer money straight to her paypal ac

Can you indicate any such instance of this'habit'? There is a 17-page Revolut thread on the Overseas board where I don't think you will find one. In fact there are few reported instances of unreliability compared to other prepaid travel cards, perhaps you are confusing Revolut with one of those?

In any case, nobody should rely on a single source of funds when travelling. Any card can be stolen, become blocked or otherwise unavailable.

Another possibility is the FairFX card, which the OP could have with a secondary 'Family and Friends' card in the neice's name, which can then be funded through the main (OP's) card. But there are fees involved (Revolut is totally free).

Just to clarify she's over 18, ideally card would be in her name & we could just top it up from time to time.

  • Another option would be for your niece to just use any credit card she is eligible for and then you or a relative pays the balance each month when the statement arrives.

Obviously she would need to stay within the credit limit each month.

Topping up normally means a prepaid card, not a credit card.
Why can it not be a debit card?
Why not a credit card - her own or as an extra cardholder?
  • It's simpłe.

Get a prepaid card for yourself (eg Optimum - http://www.myoptimumcard.co.uk)

Then get her a supplementary card on your account.

She can spend on it, and you can top it up at a post office or paypoint.

Just choose one which doesn't charge a fee for for every transaction.

The last sentence negates the 'simple' aspect.

Optimum and most other prepaid cards have high fees for overseas use, making them unsuitable. Check the MSE advice:

The OP's requirement to be able to do the topping up remotely is an expensive complication. Ideally the niece should have a bank account and funds paid into that to support her own credit, debit or prepaid cards suitable for travel.

This really is the most straightforward.

Your niece should arrange payment of the credit card in full by DD from her bank account which she operates online and the family credit the Bank account
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
