  • Blimey talk about a complicated way of doing something so simple !!!
You'd think that it would be simple, wouldn't you, but I can't find anything on the market that does what I want...

What about this dependant on what mobile you have ?
Thanks, but that's just a standard 2-alarm clock radio which has a dock for Apple devices.

Just buy a clock radio which has 5 different alarms each of which can be configured.
Well, apart from there being 7 days in the week, and apart from one of my criteria being that I'd prefer to do the configuration from a PC or Android screen rather than the buttons on a clock radio, are you aware of any clock radios on the market which have 5 separately configurable alarms?

Honestly I think you'll need to buy a raspberry pi or Arduino board and make your own.
Or just buy 5 alarms clocks

However it appears you can use a Sonos speaker setup to do what you want although this is frankly OTT

I was wondering about suggesting an rpi as the IR blaster in my remote-control scenario above, but decided that might overcomplicate such a straightforward approach. All the bits and pieces to set up an rpi would make it relatively expensive.

Logitech do seem to have "harmony" remote controls which can be controlled from smartphones. But it wasn't clear whether you could bypass their app and take more direct control, so that you can trigger a turn-on from a smartphone timer. They're not cheap, though.

What model of smartphone do you have ? It seems that some do have IR transmitters built-in.

Why do you need to have such good sound quality to wake you up?

I appreciate you like to listen to a clear reception but couldn't you just use a phone to wake you, then switch on a good quality radio on the bedside cabinet to listen to whilst you get up.
  • Actually, another idea... rather than trying to conrol a standard radio via its IR remote control, another option is to just have it plugged into some sort of programmable power socket. eg something along the lines of

I don't immediately see how many discrete timers that one has, but I'm sure there are plenty of other smart devices on the market.

  • Should also have mentioned budget - would prefer to stay under £200 if possible, and certainly below £500 unless it's an extremely good solution.
You'd actually consider paying over £500 just for something to wake you up in the morning??

+1 for Arduino or Raspberry pi. For £300 i could build one with a nice large touch screen display linked to your internet or home wifi or media streamer.

    Or just use your computer?

Still think an android phone is the easy option, or an android tablet?

Daughters got a Sony phone and the sound is brilliant, you know when the
speakers are cheap ones or not.
