Is this scenario eligible for compensation?

Hi - I have a query regarding flight delay compensation.
I was in Heathrow last week waiting to board a flight to Washington, with a connection an hour later to Rochester, New York.
We were told that the flight would be delayed by more than an hour, meaning I'd miss my connection to Rochester. The next flight to Rochester from Washington would not have been for several hours later, and would have seen me arrive in Rochester about 7 hours late.
Rather than subjecting myself to this, I approached the airline service desk while still at Heathrow, and successfully had my flight switched to a flight to Charlotte, North Carolina, with a connection to Buffalo, New York (near enough to Rochester for my needs). These flights ran as scheduled, and I arrived in Buffalo only 4 hours later than I was initially planning to have arrived in Rochester.
Am I entitled to any compensation, or do I forfeit that right by accepting an alternative flight (albeit one which still sees me arriving at my destination 4 hours late).
Any advice would be appreciated!
