Back in the days when we ate white bread without batting an eyelid...
But then, back in the day, white bread tasted like bread, not cotton wool.
Back to the GF...I always make toasties in mine, and have never had a problem. I've used normal sliced bread, crusty bread and pitta breads with no bother, other than sometimes a bit of leakage from the cheese, but I like the crispy bits.
I've also done steak, sausages, burgers and chicken breasts.0 -
I love my GF its one of my favourite kitchen gadgets.
I do cheese sandwiches most days, normal bread and never have a problem with the cheese melting.
I also cook pasties (the flat type), sausages, chops, mushrooms, onions, burgers, steak.
Its an older type and reading the above comments I am now dreading when it breaks, I never wait until the red light has turned off before putting anything in (apart from steak) and it always gets hot enough and cooks really quickly.
Just a quick wipe down with kitchen paper whilst its still warm and all done0 -
I have a new one, bought this year, and it's fine. We use it a lot, tonight we did chicken breasts. The teenagers like it for paninis but prefer the sandwich toaster for toasted sandwiches.

They are a healthy eating option.
If chip fat and lard in the pan are your thing, they wont be much use.I do Contracts, all day every day.0 -
When cooking sausages, on ours, I slice them lengthwise,to be sure they are cooked through, especially as most sausage contains pork.0

For me, GF great for toasties, but cast iron skillet much better for burgers. In fact just cooked a couple of burgers on our GF and they were dry (maybe tinibga were out) and not as tasty, but the kitchen is just as smelly!0

How are they any healthier then frying in a skillet?
I never use oil when cooking sausages, bacon, burgers etc
fat comes out of them in a skillet - same as a GF only difference is you only have the skillet to wash - not a silly plastic tray as well0 -

Putting it simply, I believe the idea with a George Forman is that the grease runs off as the food cooks, whereas with a pan the food sits in the grease as it cooks. Result, grilled food is a bit less greasy and, therefore, more healthy.0 -
ours is used very regularly for toasties. My fiance is veggie so he cooks his veggie meat in it - gammon steaks, burgers, sausages, bacon etc . I choose not to cross contaminate it with meat so have never tried it with meat
