I take your points on board but I still will never ever take out a bank account where I can't walk into Branch.

My PO by the way (crown office designated money branch), just say to ring CS and that they only deal with applications there. So I disagree that I can walk in. I certainly can't walk in and make decent headway to sort as I would with a bricks and mortar bank.

That's just how it can be with others.

I was asked by HSBC CS the other week to go into Branch to get an issue with my online access resolved. What did the Branch do? They put me on the phone to their CS!

I was asked by the Nationwide central ISA team to present details of an ISA refund made by the FSCS in a specific Branch that they said had been told they should expect me. The Branch did indeed expect me but had not the first clue on how to handle my case. One of the Branch people they expected me to deal with didn't even know what the FSCS is. So in the end they put me on the phone to their central ISA team.

In both cases, it was a complete waste of time to go into a Branch.

well good luck with making sure that the Branch you can walk into is actually staffed to deal with your problem. Given the huge changes that are taking place in some branches, e.g. Barclays, you might be disappointed.

There is no guarantee that a bricks and mortar bank will be any better than one that you can only reach by internet, app, phone or letter.

I realise there is no guarantee but I am never ever taking a chance on an internet only institution again. That I am sure of. I'm happy to take a gamble a Branch can't help rather than have no branch to go to at all.

I still think Tesco online banking is the pits compared to all others
but if you can get on with it ok,
    then all is well.

What exactly is "the pits" about it?

Which are the "all others" you compare them with? Do they include e.g. the Coop, First Direct, HSBC, Natwest/RBS/Ulster, or any of the others who make you set up the same payee on each of your accounts before you can make a payment to that payee from that account?
  • Hello all, just thought I would update.

I applied online and now have a shiny new Tesco bank account. Thanks for the advice. :)

Also, KxMx. Thanks for the concern however, I have a few friends who have a Tesco account and they have never had any issues. I used to have an ISA with them a few years back and again, never had a problem. I currently bank with HSBC (they don't allow you to open a second account, unfortunately, otherwise I would have stayed with them) The point is, I have been with them for a good few years and have only had to go into the branch ... 3 or 4 times.

Whats wrong with it? They do all the tasks I've been able to do with majority of the other banks.

Apart from the fact you have to click "Manage account" only to be taken to a second overview page and then click on the account again I don't see any issues with it.
  • With my OH, we have 8 tesco accounts between us and no problems with their online banking.
