You cynic! There's no way I would keep £20, even if I didn't notice until I got home (and was sure of the mistake). Do unto others, I say.
what?? you would go all the way back and give them the money??
they wouldn't chase you if they short changed you so why do it to them?No Unapproved or Personal links in signatures please - FT30 -
Well I voted that I'd keep it
AND I am a cashier!
Mistakes do happen and I think companies know this so the cashier wouldn't lose their job over it unless it was a regular occurence and then the cashier would probably be under suspicion of theft.
Where I work if your till is down more than £5 then you are questioned over this to see if you can explain it (has happened to me once in over 2 years on a shared till) but that's all, it doesn't get docked from your pay (is this allowed?). Although it may be noted in case it becomes a regular occurence I'd imagine.
If the shoe was on the other foot do you think the cashier would come chasing after you to give you your change in a busy supermarket leaving a queue of customers behind?
Although I must admit I have done this when a customer has left there debit/credit card behind and if a customer has gone to walk away without there change I have had to shout after them but I work in a motorway service station (yes I know there prices are scandalous) so it's easier for me to go after a customer if need be.
I think to call people thieves because they have a different view from yourself is very strong.:smileyhea Proud Mummy of 2 :smileyheaTotally addicted to Boots glitches & the Next sales!0 -
Just to add:
Someone mentioned about finding a mobile phone and taking it instore. Personally I'd be more inclined to try and contact the phone's owner myself by seeing if they had a number listed in the phone as "home" or "mum" to give it back. If this was unsuccessful then I'd hand it in to the store simply because you couldn't guarantee that by handing it in that the phone would get back to the owner. If a member of the staff decided that they'd keep it for themselves for instance!
I know this sounds terribly cynical but I think it's realistic (I've seen similar things happen in my place of work).:smileyhea Proud Mummy of 2 :smileyheaTotally addicted to Boots glitches & the Next sales!0 -

As for the other comparison, if they had short-changed me AND they noticed (which is the whole point here) then yes, I WOULD expect them to "chase" me if possible. You may think that would never happen, I disagree.2kWp Solar PV - 10*200W Kioto, SMA Sunny Boy 2000HF, SSE facing, some shading in winter, 37° pitch, installed Jun-2011, inverter replaced Sep-2017 AND Feb-2022.0 -

We did that with a mobile phone, found it in our front garden - scrolled through & found "home" - it belonged to a child who had dropped it on the way to or from school, so we were glad to let them have it back. I don't think they knew they had lost it till they got home & mum told them where to collect it from!0 -
Well as one of the theiving moral scum ruining the thread of our fair and equal society (hurumph) I have to say I would keep the money, however it would go into the donation box for my local youth centre or Oxfam.
I doubt the majority of the profit that is made by the mark up these companies place will go anywhere but their shareholders pockets. Better to see the money doing some good.
Im pretty disappointed in those on this thread who deem themselves fit to sit at the right hand of God and judge their fellow man by brandishing outrageously cruel insults. If people chose not to judge and hate those unlike themselves, but to put that energy into making things better for those who need it, the world would be the eutopia they claim to want. But I suppose its easier to be an armchair politician.Won 2007: SatNav £150 Organic Facial Creams £48 Luxury Hotel Break £320, Rimmel Mascara £8, Champneys Voucher £300If a man speaks in the middle of a forest, and there is no woman to hear him...is he still wrong?0 -
Having worked in a few different supermarket and high street chains, I would urge people to report such mistakenly given money to the cashier. I'm all for getting consumer revenge on companies. But till takings are checked daily and if there is money missing then the cashier will be investigated and potentially fired. Cashiers are often school and university students, mothers working part time, and elderly people. They are the ones who would lose out. Thank you :-)0

You may gain £20 - but you lose your soul!! Is it worth it?
Having lost the moral high ground, never let me hear you complain again!
Ever!
Ever!!
Not about Banks that overcharge, credit card companies that promise the earth and turn out to be woeful, insurance cover that doesn't, rail providers that charge you more for having to use their ticket machine because they don't have enough ticket windows, anyone who pockets cash you happen to have dropped, not even the guy that cuts in front of you every morning at the traffic lights!
Oh, and you wouldn't cast a shadow any more, either.0 -
If I was out of the door before I realised, I'd probably not go back in. If I realised at teh checkout, I'd give it back, as I know the cashier would probably have it stopped from her wages.
Why would I leave? Because I have lots of chilren with me, I wouldn't remember which checkout I was at, which would involve customer services, my frozen stuff would defrost, and I'd end up feeling annoyed instead of proud. Sorry if that's a cop out, buthtat's how I feel.I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0 -
Ah yes, a sad expression of our times indeed.
Of course, I would keep the money along with 75% of us. But then, I do wish we lived in the days of my grandparents - they had integrity and strong values. What on earth will society be like when our children are grandparents themselves?0
