Hi, we've just got a smart TV with twin HD tuners, which should allow us to record one channel on a USB whilst watching another. But do both channels need to be HD for this to work? I can't find anything online. Can you help?
Thank you.
Thank you.

Don't need to be HD, should be able to record anything.
What is the model of your TV?0 -
Hi, it's a Panasonic Viera TX-40CX802B.0

I have a Humax PVR with twin tuners, I can record 2 channels and watch a 3rd all at the same time if the one I want to watch isn't on the same MUX. Wouldn't a TV work the same way?0

Panasonic's instructions are a bit scanty, so it's going to be trial and error in many ways, it seems.0 -

You mean if the one you want to watch is on the same mux. (Or the two channels being recorded are on the same mux.)
A TV ought to work the same way, but it's down to the software. (Eg the humax could potentially record the third program that you are watching, but the software doesn't allow you to.)0 -
psychic teabag has got it right - but it's such a complicated and restricted feature that they don't usually bother advertising it.0

That's why tech savvy people rather use something like MythTV, where you can record all programs from the same mux with a single tuner as long as the PC is powerful enough to handle the amount of data.0 -
Yeah, I've mostly replaced my humax with a raspberry-pi-based tvheadend. Unfortunately, that doesn't have enough usb bandwidth to have more than one tuner, which spoiled the masterplan slightly. But it's actually quite a fun game trying to match up timeslots of repeats of programs to fit into a single tuner.
Humax is just a fallback these days, or we get missed BBC programs from iplayer.0
