Even the 80s cars were just stripped-out shells of cars with nothing to go wrong. Any monkey can build a car like that and charge as much as the other manufacturers were for more fully-featured vehicles.

Modern VWs aren't like that. They cost the same as a Ford/VW, have the same features as a Ford/VW and consequently have the same reliability as a Ford/VW. Then they spend an extra £20 on some 'premium' materials on the dashboard and fool people into thinking the cars are still steps ahead.

    Let's be brutally honest.

The VW Golf mk1 was a nice handling little car and a ground breaker in many ways. But it wasn't perfect.

I drive some really ropy ones.

Was it a better handling car than a mk3 Escort? Probably not.

Was it as fast as some of the little Renault pocket rockets available in the early 80's?

I think the character of the car was the biggest selling point and also the interiors were always a nice place to be.

As a car there were better options that soon popped up.

But having ran a garage in the early 90's for a couple of years I can say that they suffered with just as many reliability issues as other so called inferior cars.

But like the Scirocco mk1 and mk2 they will always have the benefit of character.
