VW Emissions

Hi all

Been looking for a car and found one I really like the look of. It's a golf 1.6 TDI 2012 but I'm totally confused by this whole emissions scandal thing. I've had a look on the net but can't seem to find a straight simple answer. All I want to know is what is the impact on the car? Will I end up having to pay out loads in repairs? I will be speaking to the dealer about it tomorrow but as they say forewarned is forearmed! Thank you!

    Hello there.

I'm pretty sure (from what I've read on the Emissions Scandal) that VW are recalling all affected models and removing the "cheat software".

AFAIK it's free of charge and the Government won't expect you to pay the correct band of VED (i.e. based on emissions it's zero rated when in fact you should be paying, say, £30 a year).

It seems any questions you will have are answered here: http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/emissionsinfo
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.
  • Thank you 20aday much appreciated.

VW Golf = VERY highly overrated.

I would suggest doing real research and not listening to social gossip propagated in the 1980's. The modern cars are totally different to the cars of that era.

"1.6 TDI EA189 engines will not be recalled until September 2016, but be given a mechanical upgrade, with a new flow transformer being fitted. This is a mesh that calms the swirled airflow in front of the air mass sensor and will improve the measuring accuracy of the air mass sensor. Again, like the 2.0 and 1.2 TDI recalls, Volkswagen says CO2 emissions, performance and fuel economy will not be impeded by the update. "

I was going to say buy a newer one as AdBlue equipped ones are not involved.

But to be honest I would just buy a Focus or Civic.

Whilst technically correct - they separately also cheated the CO2 emissions testing so regardless whether you opt for the NOx emissions fixing update, the bands the cars are in are potentially wrong (but won't change retrospectively - that'll be up to VW to sort with gov'ts.)

The only impact to the new owner is that mpg will be fractionally less.

There is no impact on the car for you the driver/owner, the car drives the same as before the news was announced.
The dealer isn't going to tell you anything that may jeapordise him selling you finance.

we are told "there will be no impact on the car". Only time will tell. If I had one of these VAG cars I do not think I would have the work done.

Having seen 500k+ mile Octavias and Superbs, that were sold purely because they hit the council age limit for a taxi plate, I'm not sure I'd have the work too if I had one of the affected cars.

Why turn a decent engine into something that may not be as reliable?
