You really need to wait for Nifty to come along - he will advise correctly. (but he may be on holiday!)

The first question he will ask is for the details of the laptop - the *exact* make/model etc, which will probably be written on the bottom.

Have you backed up all your data?
A fresh install of W7 would perhaps be best.

    :)

Not quite yet, as I missed my flight and had to rebook :o
Seems the OP is a bit slow in posting the necessary details.

I have a crappy old laptop that runs Vista but won't run Windows 7 because the Intel Graphics Drivers aren't available for 7. That's something you'll want to check out

    Which laptop would this be?
  • It's a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop
    T1500 @ 1.86GHz
    2GB RAM
    32 Bit O/S
    Windows Vista Home Premium (SP2)
  • £35 for Windows 7 dvd here: https://softwaregeeks.co.uk/product-category/windows-7/

Use the Microsoft freephone number to register/enter your license key (if necessary) after you have installed the dvd.

Download and save the DELL BIOS update 1525_A17.EXE
NOTE: Shut down all other applications prior to running the BIOS update utility. The update utility reboots your system in order to get the new BIOS loaded.

Right click the Icon on your desktop labeled 1525_A17.EXE and choose Run As Adminstrator

The Dell Bios Flash window appears

    Click the Continue button.

The message Pressing OK will close all applications, shut down Windows, Flash the BIOS, then reboot. appears.
    Click the OK button.

The system will restart and the Bios Flash will be completed.

    Let me know once complete.

If one needs to purchase a licence, it's cheaper to purchase just the COA for £19.55. I don't know anything about the status of selling COAs that we allocated to other machines.
  • Just updated the BIOS

Did you utilise the file from my link?

Do you need the DELL reinstallation disc for 32 bit or 64 bit? 64 bit if you intend to upgrade the RAM to 4GB.

Spend the money on 2 x 2GB DDR2-800 SODIMM for £17.50 instead and install 64 bit.
