A little late to the party but... my mum has a laptop running Vista and I was looking at installing W7 on it. Have Microsoft removed the ability to upgrade this from their website? Any help appreciated cos' I've spent a load of time going round in a big loop!

You really need to wait for Nifty to come along - he will advise correctly. (but he may be on holiday!)
The first question he will ask is for the details of the laptop - the *exact* make/model etc, which will probably be written on the bottom.
Have you backed up all your data?
A fresh install of W7 would perhaps be best.0 -
Hello there,
If you head over to this site here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=20 you can download the Microsoft Upgrade Advisor Tool to see if your Mum's laptop is compatible.
I've not used Windows 7 in years but I'm pretty sure the Minimum System Requirements were similar to those of Windows Vista. It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0 -
I have a crappy old laptop that runs Vista but won't run Windows 7 because the Intel Graphics Drivers aren't available for 7. That's something you'll want to check outChanging the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0

Thanks for the replies guys. According to Microsoft, this laptop is ok to be upgraded to W7. Trouble is after I've run that program, there doesn't seem to be a link to where I can download W7 from. And everything on microsoft is about Windows 10 now!0

That because you need to buy it, it's not a free upgrade.0 -
It is available through Amazon but at quite a price still!

Oh well - not worthwhile if it's gonna cost (thought it was a free upgrade). Like I say taking 2-3 mins to boot up so will probably try and reinstall Vista... Probably0

It might be worth doing you know. Vista doesn't have many years of extended support left now, and Windows 7 runs faster than Vista on most machines.
And of course once you've got W7, you're then eligible for the free upgrade to Windows 10, which usually runs faster still. Assuming of course there are no compatibility issues with hardware.0 -
You might be right about W7 but £169. Ouch!0

... and that's just the 'Home Edition'. The update for Windows 7 Ultimate costs even more.
I did use the Vista to Win 7 'Ultimate' update disc some years ago on one of my laptops and it was entirely successful.... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0
