Stupid Unnecessary M1 Average Speed Cameras

  • Because if it were about road safety then you wouldn't be persuing someone doing 59mph on an empty motorway in the dead of night.

Why are there not the same vigorous attempts to punish tailgaters?

But they only pursue criminals, if you weren't out committing criminal offences they'd leave you alone.

To everyone else with valuable contributions: to me it's clearly a money making exercise. Question why they leave such speed restrictions for many months and why 59 mph results in a conviction for some police forces and not others.

I believe it's a job creation scheme rather than a money making one.

However, we could all volunteer to pay more taxes so that less road traffic policing is automated, the problem is, we tend to want it both ways.
On the whole, I agree with average speed zones in road works, having worked on motorways without them, something needed to be done to curb the idiots. There have also been quite a few accidents in roadworks where the road needed totally closing for an extended period as there often isn't the space to filter the traffic past so it isn't just a safety issue.
I've been caught in the past both with the old fashioned copper with a radar and the mobile vans, not really sure how you can miss an average zone though.

When I was in Australia back in the mid 2000s I was informed that they often have variable speed limits through roadworks depending on whether the staff were there or not - they also had a system of doubled fines/points for speeding when staff were there - perhaps this was not true but it sounds like a good idea.

The 50mph limit on the M1 near Sheffield has been there at least 2 years and never seems to change, I am thankful for cruise control on my current car, set it at 50 and just watch the road with the odd glance at the speedo rather than flicking between the road and speedo constantly to avoid a ticket.

59 in a 50 zone is a bit much though even if it was at night, I have seen workers on roads at night. 50 + 10% + 2 is the police guidance for officers (not cameras) so did you get a speed awareness course?

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

They have this system in place in Canada so this I would believe.

Mind you, don't speed in Canada, if you go over a certain amount over the limit they take the car. In New Zealand, go 40kph over the limit and they take your ability to drive there from you for 28 days...I got caught at 137kph on a 100 kph motorway in a little automatic corolla...

Yeah we get away lightly compared to some countries, Australia is particularly draconian in places.
45kph over the limit in NSW, will cost you over £1000 plus a 12 month ban, do it again and you'll lose your car/bike.

Years ago (84 ish) I got caught doing over 200kph on a deserted French Autoroute, I had to cough up 900FF (around £100 at the time) before they'd let me go - it was well over a weeks wages for me.

Incidentally, Canada, Austalia and New Zealand all have lower tax rates than the UK. It's a trade-off I'd take.

The ballot box is over there, you just have to persuade enough people to elect a low tax government.

They also all have significantly worse road casualty rates than the UK, which is more likely to explain the draconian approach to penalties.
