They currently have the Microsoft Surface on sale in Argos (sale brochure with the weekend paper) and underneath it points out the price has been available for much less previously.

I'm not if that information has to be included by law but I can't imagine there are many people out there willing to pay more knowing it's been on offer for less!

could you lend me your time machine so I can go back and buy one at the lower price?

hardly newsworthy, prices change daily, offers pre christmas finish and new offers start after christmas.

Consumer protection from unfair trading regulations.

Basically even if the information is technically correct, if it is likely to mislead/deceive the average consumer (and it relates to material information - of which both the price and a price advantage is listed) then its an unfair commercial practice.

Inflating prices prior to a sale or using a price that was only charged for 1 week (when the "sale" price is used for 6 weeks) etc can all be unfair trading practices if the retailer isn't upfront about it.

Even amazon are guilty of it with their supposed fantastic black friday/lightning deals. I saw an item advertised as previously being £85, now £49.99! Seems like a good deal - unless you know they were selling the same item for £47.99 prior to the sale.

Cost and worth are two different things. Iphones (or any apple product really) are the prime example of that.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride
  • Somewhat related: I purchased a new mattress in the supposedly be-quick-and-you'll-miss-it "black Friday weekend sale!" that was down from like £600+ to £249, only to find that even now, weeks later it is still priced at that 'sale' price! Not so much of a bargain after all, really eh?
