Wrong size engagement ring, what now?!

Hey guys,

Hoping someone on here might be able to help.
On our recent trip to NYC my partner of 8 years proposed, it was magical and amazing!!!
However.. The ring is waaayy to big (bless him). They advised him that this could be sorted within 24hours so as soon as we returned home went straight to the jewellers to which they said 24hours was rubbish and that the ring cannot go from a P to K.
I am absolutely heart broken! Another ring will not be the same, they have sent it off to be altered but she said it's highly unlikely they can do anything because of the stones.

Do you think we could get the ring redesigned,
but the same design if that makes sense and if so does anyone know how much this costs?

Thanks

Congratulations on your recent engagement, it sounds like your OH is thoughtful.

There is a high likelihood that you'll never get an exact replica without paying a very high price, I think you need to lose your attachment to this particular ring. In the grand scheme of things it's no biggie: it's your OH you must love, not the token on your finger.

Probably not what you wanted to hear, but the truth.

A manufacturing jeweller should be able to use the stones and gold to make a ring to the same design but smaller. No idea on cost, and it will vary according to the jeweller you use and the complexity of the design, but it should be possible. If you're near London or Birmingham, the Jewellery Quarters will be the best place to go, but there are manufacturing jewellers in other towns too - speak to one with their own workshop rather than a shop which sends work elsewhere to be done.

    Congratulations on your engagement btw:)
  • Did he get the ring designed specially? Can't he just return it and order the same ring in the right size?

If that's not possible then Alikay's suggestion is the best idea if you want the same same design, but I doubt it will be cheap!

    Congratulations on the engagement!

  • I got mines last Christmas and it was too big. We just returned it and ordered the smaller size.

Annoyingly after a bit of weight loss, that's now too big too!!!

I'm always astounded when people spend huge amounts of money on engagement rings without knowing the recipients size! It's not something you can guess, in the slightest. The mind boggles!

Sorry OP. I realise this isn't much help. Can you not just exchange the ring for the same one in another size. I know it won't be "the ring" that he popped the question with, but does it really matter?

My partner took a ring out of my jewellery box but it's a ring I wear on my middle finger, need a smaller size for my ring finger.

Leave it, if your like most wives you'll grow in to it within a couple of years ;)

Otherwise you can get ring adjusters, some are rubbish, some merely a bit crap, otherwise have another ring that does fit on top of the other, keeping it secure.

surprised they couldnt downsize the ring, many jewellers know people in the trade that could do the adjustment

Downsizing by too much can affect the setting so the stone/s won't be held securely anymore. Not such a problem with a single tiny diamond, but once there are side stones, decorative shoulders or simply a large diamond in a fairly open setting, any alterations compromise the appearance and function of the setting.
