Tesco Delivery

I think the problem is that people have a fundamental misconception about Tesco deliveries.
They think of it (if at all) more like a 'traditional' mail order/internet system where suppliers will gather your order together up until the delivery time, so you will get most of what you ordered unless it is out of stock on a long term basis.
Of course, the supermarkets don't work like that. Even if an item has been in stock for six of the (say) seven days since you placed your order, if it doesn't happen to be on the shelf when the picker visits the location you don't get it.
It's the only way they could possibly make the service work for the price they are charging.
Their fault, in this instance, is not making it explicitly clear to people that popular, highly seasonal, items may well go out of stock at the time your item is picked.
ETA So it' well worth warning people, here, that this might happen. If you are used to your order appearing with virtually nothing missing/substituted 52 weeks a year, it might not be immediately apparent that things are likely to change at such a hectic time. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

I don't know why people are so surprised that stuff is out of stock. Especially Xmas stuff. My 5 bird roast was in my freezer at the end of November. Thats when Aldi started selling them.
Same here.........at £9.99 its an absolutely bargain.
Always buy several for my freezer & for my daughter as well.
£35 quid at Tesco for a 3 bird ??0 -
Think Tesco done you a favour saving you from a 3 bird roast...........Oh dear seen you went to iceland0

When I used to work as a supermarket delivery driver I used to absolutely HATE the 22-23rd of December. You could guarantee that half the order would be missing, or substituted for something ridiculous as most of the Xmas lines would be out of stock by then and would get a proper ear-bashing off the customer. A lot of people think that because they've ordered in November that it will all be put to one side and all in stock when in reality it's what is in stock on the morning that your order is picked. i agree the ordering system should be a lot better, especislly at asda when they put prices up between ordering and delivery. It would save the drivers from recieving an awful lot of abuse. I was thinking about my ex colleagues in the run up to Xmas and thinking how I really do not miss that job.0

hum.. different stores work differently.. our pre-orederd turkey crown had a sticky label on it with our surname, as did some of the other 'order by deadline' stuff..
when i went to add to my order after this deadline i was told i culdnt change certain items by increasing quantities.
everything was delivered with no substitutions.
it seems this store in th post let the system an dtheir customer down.0 -
I noticed that the bird had become unavailable when I logged in to complete my order on 14 December. I rang customer services, an operative there assured me in no uncertain terms that this was a pre order and it had been removed from my basket but it would be delivered with my order. When I queried this he spoke to me as if I was a numpty, again stating that it would be delivered.
The driver did tell me that there were whole racks of things put by for the pre orders in their particular store, but not mine unfortunately.0 -

I would never have a go at the drivers. It is clearly not their fault. All our drivers from Tesco have been helpful and pleasant. It's the stocking issues back at base where the prblem lies, not with the drivers.0 -
After reading this and with my own woeful Christmas Asda order I'm sticking to shopping in store next year. I'm sure a lot of people have had successful orders but it's the one time of the year where you could do without more hassle on top of everything else IF something does go wrong.
Online food shopping is generally great but it's not at the stage where I'd trust doing it for something like my entire Christmas shop. If I end up going to a supermarket to find the unavailable items from the online order I may as well just do the rest of my shopping in store and save the delivery charge. Also means picking your own subs etc.0
