Just a little confused about the compensation. My son has just flown to Japan. He left Manchester to go to Frankfurt then a connection from Frankfurt to Tokyo with the same airline. His flight from Manchester was delayed by just over 3 hours (meaning he anded after his connecting flight left), as this was a major disruption the airline put on another connecting flight (for virtually the whole plane), which they all missed as they landed too late. He then had to que in Frankfurt, (from 6.10 pm) was passed from desk to desk to be told at 10pm he had been transferred to another flight (which had left at 9.45 pm). He was then sent to another desk where finally at 12pm Frankfurt time he was offered a hotel for the night and a fight at 6 pm the following day. How do we work out what compensation he can claim? .

compensation amount may be zero or could be €600...it will depend on the reason for the delay of the flight from MAN to FRA
  • communications were down at Frankfurt airport so no flights were able to arrive or depart until it was sorted. so unsure who's fault?

If that was the case then there is no claim from the airline as this would not have been within their control
Your son would have been due 'duty of care', hotel and meals etc and can try travel insurance to see what they offer...may be £20 for each 12 hour delay or similar
I am guessing this was Monday afternoon as, looking at flightstats, it appears virtually all flights were either delayed or cancelled
  • yes it was Monday he was due to leave Manchester at 12.20 pm but only left at 3.25 pm.

Thank you, because of the reason for the delay, I was unsure about the compensation. Duty of care was eventually given, however the service was ridiculous. He was given a snack around 7pm then nothing until 12 midnight when he had reached the front of the que, being told he had been rebooked on other flights with another airline and he should have left (he had no knowledge of this and it wasn't only him!). He was then given a hotel voucher, and a meal voucher for his lunch the next day as his flight was going to be exactly 24 hours later than the one he should have been on.
