Sorry but I find this very hard to believe.

My daughter has done Karate from the age of 4.

The only upfront fee is the cost of the licence currently £20.

What they wear is called a gi and is standard for all Karate clubs and will only need a new larger size as they grow out of it.

She pays around £6.50 per week for approx. 1 hour.
  • We paid upfront fees of £100 first and a further £400 upfront fees at a later date to join the "improved scheme" and even had to buy a new uniform for £50 +

The uniform is different colours dependent on the scheme, some black and some red, the belts are the belts and they differ by stage.

Also someone has just sent me a review of the same place, doing the same thing, so it's not just us :-/
  • I wish it wasn't true :(

You agreed to the contract so there is nothing unfair about it so you can forget about all that nonsense that is written in other posts.

It's no different to any other contract like Sky, mobiles or gyms, if they have you they have you and as you agree you are in a contract then there is little you can do except ignore them and hope the court summons doesn't hit the letterbox.

Who in their right mind pays £170 pm for a kids karate class.
  • There are over 500 members so the table on the wall says at the club.

I appreciate your reply, but I hope that the people who have Pm's advice can help us further.

    Thanks again

    To the OP:
Before accepting the above comment, I suggest you read the following:

    http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1999/2083/pdfs/uksi_19992083_en.pdf

"A contractual term which has not been individually negotiated shall be regarded as unfair if, contrary to the requirement of good faith, it causes a significant imbalance in the parties’ rights and obligations arising under the contract, to the detriment of the consumer."
  • where does the £800 pounds come from?

Even if you go by what they are saying, 3 month contract, the last price you agreed to and paid was £120 per month, therefore you should owe £360?

Still a lot of money and you may well still dispute I just wondered what the extra £440 pounds is for?

even the new price of £170 at 3 months is £510 not £800!

    Have I missed something?
  • There is a breakdown of the costs, I'll find the letter out and post a list of charges. On the telephone I was advised three months (today), but it could be more or 3 months from today, as they state they didn't receive our letter to cancel until quite a few weeks after it was sent. I didn't send it recorded, but I spoke to them on the very same day as they had already started calling at that point (as they call when you miss a class to find out why).

    Thanks all
