Some of the genealogy websites offer a free trial which may give you sufficient time to track her down

does give the indexes for all the births, deaths and marriages in the UK up to 1974, if you were born before that she may have married prior to 1975 and you may find her marriage on there - however it does depend on her having an unusual name - if she's Mary Smith you are probably out of luck as to which Mary Smith she is.

She may not have been in the area you were born as unmarried mothers were sometimes sent away to hide the 'disgrace'

If the dates don't work the indexes on ancestry do go rather more recently so you could PM me and I'll look up on there if you want - but no guarantees I'll find it

Keep calm, this might be a marathon rather than a sprint.

All the very best of luck - and I am so glad your adoptive parents are wonderful!

I do not know what years you are looking at, but try https://familysearch.org/search/

I would tend to assume that mum was aged 16 or over at the time of your birth.

I would not assume that she lived anywhere near the place where you were born; even in the 1970 women were often sent to a home for unmarried mothers sufficiently far from their parental address to reduce the embarrassment felt by their parents and perhaps hide the whole issue from other people locally.

Do also check your local family history library. Many have copied of the birth death and marriage indexes up to the end of C20 which you can search for free. There is a link here to list detailing them here https://www.gov.uk/research-family-history; Derbyshire looks better for you.

  • Can you look up your local family records office?

It is tricky with census records not being published until many decades later.

If you want you are most welcome to PM me her name and place of birth etc and I will try to look her up. I have been successful with a few, can't promise anything but can try.

I can appreciate how you feel, my mother was adopted (found her birth mother through putting a newspaper article in the town she was born in) and my sister has recently adopted a child, and thankfully these days there is much more contact with the birth mother, so her daughter has since briefly met her and they have details of her.

When we were looking for my partner's birth mother we used various sites but we also got in touch with the adoption social worker at the council . It didn't matter that it wasn't the area he was born or that his Mum came from. This gentleman was fabulous- Not only did he counsel my partner about his expectations and the possibility of all outcomes . He also finally tracked her down too and acted as a go between as my partner did want to make contact.

    Another route to investigate
