If you have not raised a complaint then there is no reason for your bank to refund. It could be a mispost (wrong account number). You need to ask the bank.

it seems that my ex has been applying and not told me, but as the loan was in joint names they paid 50/50 ... so whilst it is a lovely xmas gift for me as i was not expecting it, slightly concerned that he has been claiming PPI without my knowledge hoping to keep it all..
question is will banks always pay like this or is there a chance that he can keep it all?

50/50 is what it should be on joint PPI

getting more confused, so i spoke to the ex and he has not heard about his half, and said he has not claimed, although the idiot was getting bombarded with calls from PPI companies so said ok, as he did not think there was anything due. He has also said that he has had papers from this company to sign and return, but has not done so yet. surely they are not allowed to so that without my permission?
not really sure what if anything i should now do

First of all, bonus for you that you have no contract with a PPI claims firm - if your ex was daft enough to use one he has to pay 100% of the fees, you have NO LIABILITY for them, whatever he says, you don't have to pay squat - so your refund on the loan was around £1172 - he will be charged 25-40% of that total by the CMC which will come out of his half, you pay nothing - woo!

Second, he's probably just forgetting something and/or dealt with an unethical claims firm - technically on a joint loan both parties need to sign up to it but either he or they lied about having you both on board so he is probably just being evasive to avoid admitting he forged your signature (or the claims company did)

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

So following on from this my ex said got a significantly reduced amount...question now would these companies have looked at all the finances and only found one?
I asked my ex what he said etc and he was useless, said he could not remember, had paperwork somewhere, thinks he only said yes to one etc... reason being i was going to contact some of the others but there is no point if they have already been checked.

They'll have sent letters to whichever ones your ex told him about. Or possibly sent a letter to every lender on the planet, regardless of whether you have cards or loans with them or not.

It will have been a half ar$ ed job either way, which doesn't help you.
