Chorlton is very popular with students and has great transport links. Also fab shops and bars:beer:

Fallowfield, Victoria Park, Levensulme, Longsight, Hulme are also big student areas- With so many universities, Manchester has loads of student areas

They all have good bus links to the unis and some good pubs and bars:beer:

No where is crime free but like everywhere you get good locks and get good insurance and you don't take silly risks!

    I woudn't live anywhere else

If she's looking to rent she should look here: www.manchesterstudenthomes.com. She should take a look at the advice guides on there as well. It could save a few mistakes. That is run by the uni so it could help if their are any problems during the tenancy. I would warn the standard of student housing in Manchester is not, in my experience, very high. The houses are often basically good houses but badly maintained and preobelms with damp, broken boilers and ill fitting doors are pretty common. If it is possible the speak to the current tenants when looking round and ask them what the landlord is like about fixing and maintaining things.

The main bus corridor (the 40s) go along Oxford Rd-Wilmslow Road through Rusholme, Fallowfield and into Withington. I used to live in Rusholme and it was great for me. It is surprising how quickly it quietens down once you get back from the main road. There are other bus routes going through other areas but they are less frequent. There is a train service between Levenshulme and Picadilly that is good and quite cheap especially with a young pesons railcard.

I actually live in Old Trafford at the moment. It is near the tram stop but the tram is really expensive and totally packed out at rush hour. I get around on a bike which is a very popular way to get about Manchester (and greater area, Trafford/Salford, for pedants) because it is pretty flat. If you were thinking of buying Old Trafford might be a worth a look because it is a bit run down (deprived area but not as deprived as Salford) and they are pushing some development work around here and building new yuppie flats/ factory conversions.

Thanks Kitty, the train between Levenshulme is a good point as she could get to Oxford Rd Stn easily from Piccadilly.
  • sorry to bang on about levenshulme but ive a couple more points to add...

there is an excellent bus service to the university/town. The 197 bus takes approx 20/25 mins to the student union on oxford road and then continues on to the middle of town. The 192 runs every 5 mins all along the A6 into piccadilly and runs until about 2am. In the other direction (i.e. south) busses are frequent (every 5 mins) to stockport (good if you want to go bowling) and occasional to didsbury village/burnage.
The train is cheaper than the bus by far and runs about every 20-30 mins till about 11.30pm.

One downside is that there is currently no supermarket very close but if your daughter or a friend has a car or if you are willing to shop by bus then you wont have any probs (or you could always use home delivery!).

As an aside.... whats the Midway like?? ive never been brave enough to go into that particular pub!!!
  • My friend used to live right next to Mauldeth Road station. Really nice place as student digs go. Excellent links to Oxford Road on teh train, nearby shops for essentials and a supermarket a short bus ride away and a wide selection of pubs for a quiet night and the call of the city centre only a short (and cheap) train journey away!!!

Some of my best memories are from nights where I ended up kipping on his couch!!

hi, I was a student in Manc, first in Whalley Range, then, Chorlton (near Southern Cemetery), then in Hulme. None of these places have a great reputation, but maybe I was lucky as I never had any trouble. After I was a student I lived on Victoria Road inbetween Fallowfield and Withington for 4 years, and I can honestly say it was really great. Most of our neighbours weren't students, they were families, and they really looked out for us. Despite being close to both council estates and student roads, we never had any trouble there at all. When I bought my house,I bought in Sale. I never considered living here as a student, but I don't know why, as it is much safer, and has great transport links into town. that said, I think the Oxford Road corridor bus routes are fantastic and go all night. when I lived in withington I always cycled into town, as it is only 10 minutes.

I would definitely consider places like Trafford, Sale, Northenden as cheaper but relatively safe alternatives to Didsbury and the like. There aren't many students there so that might be a drawback for your daughter. If she wants to be in studenty areas then consider the Eastern side of Oxford Road in Fallowfield, or Withington. Didsbury is nice though not as nice as it used to be, and very overpriced. Avoid the centre of Fallowfield like the plague. We looked at some houses in one of those roads behind the Queen of Hearts pub. Out of interest, we knocked on every door in the street and every single house down the road had been broken into within the last 6 months. Not meaning to scare you, but those roads are full of students, so every Saturday night the houses are empty and the burglars go mad.

I was a music student too, at the RNCM, is that where your daughter is going?

good luck, and don't be put off by all the scary info on this thread! Manchester is a great city, especially for music.

Temba, yes, rncm, have you left now? Agree Manc is great for music, DD and I often used to visit to catch concerts at Bridgewater - lovely concert hall.

Its great that you're so keen to look out for your daughter, and only natural. Don't be surprised though when after you've spent every waking moment researching the best possible option for her, she'll turn around and say "Er great, thanks Mum & Dad but I've already signed up to a houseshare behind Robinskis"

I went to uni in Manchester and half the fun was working out with your mates who was going to live with who and where. Traipsing round south Manchester in the drizzle with your a to z in one hand and Opal Estates lettings list in your other is all part of the experience. If any of my mates parents had poled up in their Volvo armed with facts and figures gleaned from the MSE forum, they would have been cast into social exile till graduation. Manchester of all places offers a weath of accomodation and support for students and its really easy to find somewhere relatively safe and good value without masses of parental fuss, so don't worry about it!

Lol, yes, you're probably right there! Although sadly, it wouldn't be a Volvo I turn up in!!

So far the only thing she knows is don't choose Moss Side and she likes to eat in Curry mile! :D
